Hi All

I have been looking for an A2 for a few weeks as my daily car. Want something in very good cosmetic order on body work , 1.4 or 1.6 petrol.
I plan to see this car in Telford today Sunday 26 Feb - please let me know what you think and questions to ask - before I go - it’s a 100 mile trip fir me so don’t want to waste time if it’s not worth it .
It seems to have a scuff on driver side rear corner but can’t be sure.
I will ask seller on service history this morning
Cambelt
Water pump
Battery
Service history
Anything wise to bet him on ?

I have never bought a private car myself, usually my brother in law is with me and is knowledgable about cars generally. He cannot attend.

Wonder if any A20C member ate in the area and would be available around noon today ?

If you know other cars for sale that are better buys please let me know. I will post on the wanted forum too.

Thank you in advance and feeling a bit nervous as I am a car novice and growing to like the A2 more each day

Thanks

Rupe

Im pretty sure that at least 2 of the interior photos are not even of the car!

If you haven't already done so, make sure you do an HPI type history check (I've used mycarcheck in the past)

Note that this looks to be a 5 seater (with missing central headrest). If that's what you're after then great. Be aware though that there's no split fold or ability to remove a single seat here. You can remove both, but it's a big heavy lump!!

Why had the car not been mot’d for 4 years between 2018-22?
Does it have evidence of regular servicing?

Just to note a couple of the images are not of an A2

Someone will no doubt list the other main items check, wishbones are one i’d imagine.

Just looked at mot history. Not tooooo bad, but looks like it was off the road for 3.5 years until most recent mot... need to ask why, has it suffered from being stood idle? Probably! On the plus side, mileage is low. Will almost certainly be due a cambelt on time basis.

Also, car is showing as blue on the mot check site, not black....

Suggest extreme caution. Though there are diamonds in the rough...

Price doesn't seem too bad to be fair.

I think it's possibly cobolt blue, which is easily mistaken for black.

As a good rule of thumb the tyres are the eyes of the soul and tell you a lot about a cars previous care and maintenance, matching and good tread is a big green light, odd and worn out not ideal

Agree, the rear seat shots look like a different car, door cards and seats and headrests are all wrong. And the cars colour is grey in those shots. Pics of electric window controls, again different car. Buyer beware on this one. I also think this looks like it might be cobalt blue but it’s very difficult from the photo.

I wouldn’t travel far if I was you for this - blatant trader seller and they don’t tend to underprice their stock.

If it was local then I would view but with low expectations.

If you’re looking for a car to buy then you’re always best off buying from a club member as you’re more likely to find one that doesn’t have hidden issues for a good price.

My instincts are telling me " If in doubt, leave it out " I have the scars from two evil A2 bites on my bottom! Dodgy photos/ trader/history........NO

Try and buy from a club member is a point worth taking on board, the other option is to tell your vendor to submit their car to an appraisal by a pro before your purchase. Gary up at B&F in West Hounslow would do that for you. If your vendor is unwilling then you've got your answer have you not?

By vendor I do not refer to Mr Dodgy, my initial advice there stands.

Happy hunting.

HI
If you do go and visit the A2 try and take someone with you, and preferably a scan tool to identify any possible faults.
If he is a trader then he should be able to address any issues the car might have and to offer some sort of warranty on repairs.
Some A2's are used as second vehicles in households so that could account for car not being mot'd/used.
And i would deffo get the car HPI checked before i decided to visit.
Best of luck
Steve

Thank you all so much and glad to be on aboard. I am humbled by your responses.

The trader says it was a px from an old couple so could explain gap in MOT. It has 2 scuffs rear and front. No service history.
I have asked for new photos of the interior.

Probably best to give this one a miss. As you are firstly unsure what to look for and you normally take your brother in law, that is a good enough reason to say it is not for you.

Do some research yourself to find out where the problem areas are to educate yourself firstly. Then try to find cars you can see near to you to at least confirm the model you would like.

Viewing a car for someone is always risky especially if they base their opinion on something and the buyer decides is was wrong and then blames the viewer. I do view for others but if I do not know them very well I get a disclaimer from them first to prevent any ill feelings afterwards - not that I have had any issues to date.

Thanks for your comment. What is Gary’s contact details? So I can pay him to inspect the car before I buy - assuming he is Hounslow. London are is best ?

You will find him at B&F Autos they are in West Hounslow and are well versed in all matters A2. He is easily found on Mr Google. Which remind me, I must ring him to book my MOT. That's the one next to Heathrow.

If you have a problem finding the number, send me a PM and I'll provide the contact details. (Hope that isn't a rule breaker)

Since this car is in Telford, WOM automotive in Stoke are more local and I’m sure would do the same and are also very experienced with A2s
