Temperature problem

Hi

i had the sender unit replaced about a year ago and temp was fine at 90C
but recently started having problems again so i replaced the thermostat
which fixed the problem for a week.

but now the problem has started again. if i use the heating this lowers the temp...and alot of the time it is sitting pretty much at 60 and no heating.
Has the thermostat gone again?

Quite possibly - or it could be the wiring.

My snowflake came on today! I have a problem with the ambient temperature sender, but have replaved it with a brand new one, to no avail. As there is no other component, it's either the clocks or the wiring that are dicky - 3.5 celcius? was more like 23.5 today!

Cheers,

Mike

it could be the gauges...I've spoken to an independent VW specialist he siad
this can be a problem too.

would you say its thermostat as after an hour of driving the temp went
back down to what zero but showing as 60C

i had the climate on HI and there was no heat

i think its the thermostat because temp sender unit would
not affect interior heating..

Thermostat would be my first guess, and it's the cheapest option too.

Cheers,

Mike
That's what they all do. Change the Thermostat and all is fine then. But I bet it is never or mostly not the thermostat but a bad contact at the connector. I had the problem for months and don't have it anymore.

Edit: I was wrong. I meant the coolant temperature sensor.

I have a similar problem.

On Monday in the rain, I drove through a deep puddle (No choice) and ever since the temperature gauge has struggled to get to 90, it gets there eventually but as soon as i drop the speed down it drops off towards 60. If i then turn the climate control off it drops down to 60.

I've tried self diagnosis, which has involved driving with no climate on at all, and it will happily get to 90 eventually (longer than normal) before dropping off towards 60 again. I've done the climate on Auto at 21 degrees and it gets to 90 degrees and stays there unless i drop the speed back or turn it off and then it drops like a lead balloon.

The final try was tonight on the 14 mile journey home from work where it didn't move from 60 all the way home, the cliamte was on Auto 20 degrees, it usually gets to 90 by 7 miles.

I think its a case of a loose connection or a wet connection but I've no idea where to look for the connections.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I've read the thermostat problems other a2 owners have had and before i try changing the sender i'd rather do the loose connection route 1st.

See the attached thread for issues on thermostats and temp senders - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3208&highlight=gauge+woes

In this cold weather, if your heater has suddenly lost efficiency then its likely to be a thermostat problem ( If you have an early TDi then it could also be the Webasto heater at fault)
If the heater is working normally but the temp gauge is all over the place then its more likely to be the sender unit.

CheersSpike

Listen to the Webasto if you have a TDI. You could find that it isn't working anymore, like i did. A poorly charged battery can cause the heater glow plug not to fire up and so you don't have the auxiliary heating needed in these cold temperatures.

Its not the faithful Webasto. That kicks in most mornings.

I'm certain its a loose connection, or a now badly earthed connection because of the water issue.

When the rain stops I'm going to have the bonnet off and take a closer look no point in doing it now as its non stop rain at the moment and dark by the time i get home, so hopefully the weekend will give me an opportunity.

If not it will be the sender unit i shall look at.

I finally bit the bullet today and contacted a VW idependant.

After having a discussion with the guy, and explained about what was happening and what i thought it was and the fact that i'd read about the problem. He said it would be £50 + vat for them to scan the car, even though I'd self diagnosed. It would then be £80 + vat for the parts and labour, but only if its what i said it was. £150 for a part that costs £18 supposedly and 30 minutes to fit.

I asked about not bothering with the scan and he said thats what they did with all cars and it was a standard charge.

Based on this I'm going to try changing it myself.

Does anyone have any photos of the location and a guide to assist me with doing this? Tools? etc.

Thanks

Thermostat or sensor?

Hi Trufflestu

I too have similar problem with 1.4 TDI 2001 and would be pleased to know if the thermostat was it?

My gauge reads 90 sometimes 60 and readings in between at random.

I have posted elsewhere and some favoured sender replacement 1st so thats what I tried.

I had a black 2 pin sensor (269415 06-01) and following a lot of searching and 3 visits to Audi dealer worked out that the listed replacement part 059 919 501A (4pin) is an upgrade. This wouldn't fit straight on however owing to incompatible 2 pin existing connector 1J0 973 702. After a lot of hassle, I worked out you also need new connector 4B0 973 712 and wire 000 979 131 plus shrink wrap. You cut off the old connector and use the wire to solder connect. I connected the other to pins numbered 1 (white/grey wire) & 2 (green/grey wire) on the 4 pin connector. Hope this helps you or anyone who suspects they have a temp sensor problem.

However! … on testing, the gauge still sometimes reads 90 sometimes 60 and readings in between at random. :(

I am now therefore considering replacing the thermostat as it seems both items give the same symptoms when they play up, hence my interest in your solution.

Good luck Pete
