Chat The A2 community.

...last night my A2 has been written off.

I am wondering what to do when it comes to insurance. It's a write off for sure, but can such wreack be recovered? And by who? Can we / the community salavage anything from it?

And in time can it be replaced by an equally dependable and cherished A2. I will look to this community for help if I may.

Steve, would really appreciate you advice and guidance in purchasing our replacement when we get round to it. Needs a bench seat, min, but silver, SE, red leather, DIS, cruise would be nice. Speak sometime soon

Hi Dave,

I'm sorry and shocked to read about your accident last night. It's odd to think that, whilst I was cooking my evening meal, you were going through an ordeal. I'm obviously pleased to hear that you're all OK-ish. As has been said on many car forums, metal can be replaced but people cannot.

If your A2 had various things that you really appreciated, such as DIS, red leather bench seat, cruise control, etc, then it's probably worth buying it back from the insurance company. Its post-accident value will be tiny, especially if it's a Cat B write-off. This would enable to you replace it like-for-like with much greater ease. Any decent A2 with a bench seat could accept the niceties from your written-off A2.

Best wishes to you all for a speedy recovery,

Tom

Thanks Tom. I hope to see it as there's a few personal possessions still in it. Will try get the new autolights, battery, aeroblade, wheel caps off it. Alas the oily bits such as suspension refurb and break overhaul are a deadloss. No room for me to buy back and strip.
It was a rock solid car. Was running it as a company car without a single blip on its reliability record in 50k miles. Sigh...

The search will soon be on for its successor.

Thanks

Dave...

Just seen the car description in your tag Steve. Sounds perfect! May go for petro this time round due to all the bad PR on diesel. Let me know how it's progressing will you....thanks
The Violet FSI is a project. It is costing me quite a lot to return it to its former glory.
since it is a special car in a rare colour and high spec it is not going to be an economically viable car to sell.

For example, sourcing the seats is costing an arm and a leg. I have had to buy two sets of red leather to get the Sport front and bench rear combination. I then have to convert the fronts to heated. I would not normally bother doing that but I want to return the car to the spec it had when it was on the Audi stand at the 2002 Motorshow.

Just spent a fair amount on mechanical restoration including, cam belt, brakes, exhaust, clutch and general spruce up mechanically too. Again not all necessary if this wasn’t a project.

The car will be worth around half of the cost of the project and so not really a car to sell.

But people who know me (especially those on here) know that when I say that I am not planning to sell a car I soon change my mind. I have no plans to sell, but if this was something that would appeal to you then if it helps to get you back in an A2 that you can cherish I would at least let you know my plans. I would rather take a hit on the price because of your situation if it genuinely helped.

Sorry that the above rambled on a bit but I didn’t want to just say “No” without explaining the position.

Glad to hear everyone is going to be okay. That’s the most important thing of course.

If the insurance company’s Engineer even looks I’ll be surprised.

The torsional stresses on the car’s frame would have been massive during a crash like that - it’s unlikely the cars hit at exactly 180 degrees so there will have been at least some twisting which would rate it as the old Cat C. I think you would struggle to repair a car with any significant frame damage and, even if you could, getting insurance would be impossible and there might always be the doubt that the car would be as strong in another accident (heaven’s forbid).

I think you are best to go for an undamaged car and if there were parts of your car that you wish to save then buy back and transplant.

I did this with my wife’s smart car - upgraded stereo system, wheels, all the dash pods, cup holder, door pockets - easily transferred in a few hours. I also found out that parts of the car went to rebuild other cars - exhaust, gear box, a few of the sensors. It made me feel better to know Artie kept others going and it made it a lot easier to replace him because we didn’t need to look for the stereo etc

Good luck and I hope everyone feels better soon.

Hi Dave,

Very sorry to hear of this awful crash, just glad to hear your all ok-ish and the children are on the mend. As parents we exist to keep our little ones safe so thank god you were in an A2 and it has largely protected you guys form something altogether much worse. I'm not sure if the Insurance will let you buy he car back, would be great for you personally if there are bits you want to recover, but i'm under the impression that if the crash was so heavy insurance companies won't release anything but i guess only time will tell and what bracket they put it into will determine that.

I wish you all the best for you and your family and hope you manage to find that perfect A2 to replace the one that served you so well.

Kind Regards

Mark.

Sounds like a horrific evening, glad that you and yours are out the other side without any serious lasting damage.

I know the feeling when you have to give up a car that has served so well - My partners 03 Micra did her job well and even did a full panic run to the hospital at around 110mph a couple years back. I nearly choked up when I let her go, but she was well past her use by date by then and like yours, had done it's job.

Best of luck on the hunt for your next A2 and a speedy recovery for all.

Nick

Thanks for explaining Steve. Apologies if I made you have to justify your position. Totally understand you aspirations with dare I say it "A2project2". I'm sure it'll be a wonderful testament to your personal love of these cars. Hopefully one that one day I may be able to persuade you to part with ;-)

Certainly no need to apologise. I chose to clarify my position so that people will understand why it was not an instant “Yes” from me.

Best wishes and as I say. You will have first refusal when I know what I am doing with the car should you still be interested.

Dave,

I’m so very sorry to read this mate, but I am immensely pleased to see that you and your children left the scene in good health overall. The impact looks horrendous, the fact that the A2 stood up so well, protecting you all, is a testament to the engineering design, strength and safety features of the car.

Having met you and your son at ADI last year, your interest and enthusiasm for the A2 was obvious and infectious. I recall how you were really enjoying the driving experience and looking forward to gradually improving your pride and joy. I also remember how you had persuaded your manager to allow your company car to be an ‘older vehicle’ and won them over in the process.

I sincerely wish you all well and hope that any physical and mental scars are short lived. I also hope to see you owning another of these little treasures in the future and remaining part of the community. There is enough support and friendship here to help out and scan the for sale ads when the time is right.

Warmest regards and thoughts are with you.

Cheers,

Darren and family

Thanks Darren. Just managed to get the kids home. We are going to camp out in the front room tonight and tomorrow with fire lite. Hold them tight, as you never know what's coming.
They have hospital discharge papers like Christmas lists. Broken collar bone, broken fingers, chipped vertebrae, glass in eye, lacerations, stitches and deep bruising. I can't quite believe I was in the same car! Mind you, I have few choice bruises coming up. Though typing has improved now that I have freed several fingers from their bandages (don't forget to let go of the steering wheel Dave!)
Suspect police and insurance will be a long haul, and will have to wait until that is sorted before I can start looking to invest. Though amazingly I have already had a few very kind offers to get me back on the road with a A2. So who knows.
Thanks again everyone. Wasn't sure about posting this on here, am not looking for a sympathy vote, obviously a terrible thing to happen to us, but now it's done we can look to what positives can come of it. Im sold on the A2

A blessing that you all walked away Dave, a terrible list of injuries. Yes, hold them tight mate and savour those moments. A poignant reminder of what is important in life and how much trivia we often worry about and incorrectly prioritise. My sons 8th birthday today, he and I are catching up with Robot Wars as I type and snuggling up. I really feel for you and I am taking stock too.

The speediest of recoveries and my very warmest wishes.

Hope you are all soon mended budword. In the overall scheme of life a car being written off (even an A2) is neither here nor there, it is the health and speedy recovery of your family that is important. However it does show what an intrinsically secure car the A2 is, even when coming upto being an almost 20 year old design.

As for the community of A2 enthusiasts there is no doubt (as I have had rediscovered after a year long leave of absence from this forum) there are very few forums -if any - that get close to this forum for all round enthusiasm, friendship, support, discussion, knowledge and simple enjoyment. Long may it continue.

Hi Dave,

Sorry to hear about your accident last night but pleased to hear that you are now all home again, if a bit battered and bruised. Thankful that your little cars kept you all relatively safe at what sounds look a horrific ordeal. Wishing you all speedy recoveries from your injuries.

Hope all is well with your family.

Not the best time of year for this to happen when xmas is just round the corner. I hope the kids don't suffer mentally after this horrific accident. These idiots better get banned for dangerous driving but knowing how good our justice system is they will get a petty fine and 3 penalty points....go figure!

Hi Dave, Just read about horrible accident - so glad everyone survived and the A2 space frame did it's job. It's incredible how quickly your children have been discharged given their injuries but at least they are back with you and your wife and getting lots of love and 1:1 care. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery for everyone.

Your A2 looks a write-off but I'm sure the community will help out finding another and any extras needed.

A sad farewell...

Have managed to salvage:
Autoheadlights
Hardtouch aircon
Fuel release switch
Virgin tool kit & jack
Emergency kit
New Battery
False floor
Boot cover

Will be free to community if my new A2 has all of them, when I get it.
