The definitive tyre / wheel size thread

I have come across that site too when checking out All weather tyres. With it being an international site quite a few of the tyres are not available in the UK..... If you go to MyTyres and select a tyre and click onto it a list of test results appears, mostly from Germany and with Google translation you can get a good idea of the tyres performance.

One issue i have come across in my research on wheel/tyre combinations is the strange price differentials in tyres. For example the 195/55x15 tyres are roughly the same price as 185/60x15 but both are about 15-20% more expensive than 195/50x15.... Surely they cannot be that much more expensive to produce!

ah yes, while I remember... the US sites of many of these companies also list the weights involved.
195/45R16, 195/50R15, 185/55R15 tend to weigh pretty much the same.

Its just supply and Demand.

195/50's are probably the cheapest as they are mass produced.
195/55's were for me slightly more expensive.

I apreciate that. I raised partly to advise anyone thinking of changing wheel or tyre size to be careful. The 'standard' factory fit tyres at 175/60 are just as expensive as the 195/55's so in that respect I would rather have a bit more rubber on the road for the same money. They are all still significantly cheaper than 205/40x17's such that the saving is paying for the 15" wheels.

Can anyone offer advice on XL or non XL tyres?

I can't find anything in the hand book!

Most tyre dealers say, I need XL, even micra's & clio's use them these days mate, is their usual monkey response. Are they just trying to get people to spend more?

Everything I read suggests that a light car doesn't need them, and the XL tyres will stiffen the ride. I'm trying to make it softer.

Interestingly XL Tyres have a lower load capacity at the same pressure as standard tyres, and only have XL capacity at a higher than standard pressure!

Does that make them softer than Non XL at a standard pressure?

Any proper advice is much appreciated.

Conti Premium Contacts

KwikFit have an offer on 185/50/16H's at £68.34 each if you buy 4
Anyone in Wiltshire area want my front Pirelli's with about 8k miles on them?

aspiotis - that's a brill price for the Contis. Bought 4 in the past month and paid £86 each even tho' that was the best price in N. Lincs at the time.

Tyre Express are currently selling 185/55/16 Bridgestone Turanza ER300's for £57 incl delivery on 2 or more. They came 4th in the last AutoExpress test with top marks for comfort and low noise. These are about 3% larger in dia than 185/50's

For info, from March 2010, all 185 (and smaller) section tyres must comply with the latest noise regulations and carry an 'S' approval mark

Cheers Spike

hi what would i need to do to make audi tt wheels with 225x45x17 tyres fit how do you stop rubbing.thank you

Easy - take the tyres off and fit 205/45 R17 or 215/40 R 17 tyres. There's no way of shoe-horning 225.45 tyres in

Cheers

Mike

Still not sure

Still can't get a definitive answer to my query.

There seems to be more to tyres than the name. Goodyear, Continental, Michelin, and Dunlop seem to be first for consideration, on verdicts or have I succumbed to their advertising!

Heard that Toyo Proxes CF1 are worth considering; anyone used them?

It seems that my choice is governed mostly by the size wheel that I currently have (Hankook 175/60 R15 81V).
Or should I consider 185/50 R15?
What about 185/55 R15?
