The definitive tyre / wheel size thread

Remember, in UK, we all (well, most of us anyway) tick a box on our insurance to say our cars are not modified. If, in fact, they are modified (and non standard wheel/tyre combos would certainly be classed as such), then we would be on very thin ice indeed in the event of a claim and assessor visit.
When I see comments like "... it only rubs the arch on tight turns etc..." I think, well, that's all right then, as long as you don't have to brake hard, when taking a sharpish bend!
Mac.

Always pays to be straight with your insurance company as you know they will always try and weasel out of any claim ..brakes they were not interested in ..bilstein suspension is direct replacement..3 of our 4 a2s are standard ref wheels on the other they were noted but as they were Audi no action ..as a lot of insurance is underwritten so they are doing their job most times ..

Does anyone have the dimensions of the space-saver wheel? Perhaps this could be added to the definitive list so that there is only one place to have to refer to. This is a very useful resource to be able to refer to. Thanks.

According to the VW/Audi online parts catalogue, it's a steel rim 5Jx15 ET28 with OEM part number 8Z0601027A

Be careful to include the final "A" as OEM part number 8Z0601027 is for the wider 5.5Jx15 ET34 steel rim, which some people have ordered by mistake.

You can also order the 5Jx15 ET28 steel rim with a folding tyre for emergency use only (ie. space saver) using OEM part number 8Z0601011L

I don't know what size tyre the folding tyre inflates to, but I have seen 155/70R15 banded about so it could be that size. Maybe just fit an ordinary 165/65R15, as it's a cheap and common size with top brands such as Michelin and Continental being available in that size. It may even be a good idea to keep a winter tyre as a spare. That way you won't get stuck in the winter and can still use it for limited use in the summer albeit with reduced summer performance. Or maybe a good all-season tyre.

When I bought a Set of Genuine Audi Steel Winter Wheels for the A2 I chose the wider 5.5J Rims to allow the use of more Sizes of Tyres. Officially the Minimum Rim Width for 195 65 15 is 5.5J.

You can put 165 65 15 Tyres on 5J or 5.5J but not 195 65 15 on 5J officially.

Having said that I have only ever put 165 65 15 Vredestein Snowtrac Tyres on the Wheels. Not great as Spacesaver Spares as they are Directional Tyres.

Most winter and all-season tyres are directional. One of the few exceptions is Vredestein Quatrac 5 all-season tyres.

I’m considering a Set of Vredestein Quatrac 5 for our Audi A6 Avant Quattro. Not only because I think Vredestein are great Tyres but also they are the only All Season Tyres in the Size 255 35 20. You are right in saying a lot of Winter and All Season Tyres are in fact Directional. However I currently have Continental TS 830 Winter Audi Specific ( AO ) Tyres in that Size on a Set of Refurbished A6 Rotors. The Tyres are not Directional. Just Asymetric. Just put a Set of 185 50 16 Toyo Winter Tyres on the A2. They are not Directional either. Just Asymetric.

Hi all, I have a 195/65/15 tyre. I see it is not on the list but is there any way it can be made to work eg. spacers? Asking because I was given the tyre and want to know before I went ahead and bought another three. Thanks

It's too tall.

Hi there, I have been offered some very nice wheels marked on them is 5x100 6.5j x16 inch et42 with 185 tyres on will they fi my A2 tdi? regards Simon

No they will fit fine and although they are a slightly higher profile than the standard fit 50 your speedo will actually read more accurately than the 3mph or so that it normally over reads (ie displaying 70mph when you're actually doing 67) ?

Should be absolutely fine. I've run 185/55x16 on the stock 6Jx16 ET35 six-spoke rims with no issues. With the same size tyres on 6.5Jx16 ET42, if anything they will protrude further towards the suspension than towards the outside. This link is set to compare the two wheel sizes, there's a summary at the bottom.

Thank you very much, both of you will go ahead and purchase!

Be aware that your speedometer may well underreport your speed with these (which is illegal). Before buying, at the very minimum, ask your insurance whether they will cover you with these.

I have 195/50 R16s on my standard SE rims, and they are absolutely at the limit of what is acceptable.

I would expect the 185/55/16 to read absolutely spot on.
The 195/55/16 currently on another thread would under read I would have thought ?
