The definitive tyre / wheel size thread

I went for 195/55/R15 on my stock 6 spoke rims. I noticed an improvement over the old 175/65/R15. I also chose Falken as the manufacturer, model ZE-912, and i'm pretty happy with them. Maybe a bit on the soft side, but grippy and reassuring in corners, not to mention about their good price.

i have already given a similar response on another thread where lucy asked the same question! However I went from 195/55's to 195/50's because in the UK they are much cheaper.

I got these on my summer pepperpots and very pleased with them

I have had Uniroyal rainexpert summer tyres fitted today. Compared with the Conti Winters they are a little stiffer and noisier with not as much steering feel. Will see how they settle in.

I have 175/60x15 tyres on 15" alloys and i'm getting 16" alloys in size 6Jx16, i have looked at tyres in size 185/50x16 but there are not many tyres in that size, i have been on a tyre size calculator and have found 205/45x16 are a diameter match. My question is will the 205's be ok for the car?

Personally I think on a 6J (6inches is 152mm wide) a 205 (mm) section tyre will be too wide for the actual wheel; you might want to consider instead 195/50/16 - that will be slightly oversized vs OE but will give you a more accurate speedo) and the extra height on the sidewall will help with ride.

If you want to swap your R15s for my R16s you'd be welcome. I have the Pirelli P6000s (185/50R16) on there at the moment. I want the R15s because a) the extra rubber helps with MPG, and b) there are more tyres in that, including LRRs which I can't get in the larger size.

I think this thread is moving away from its original purpose on providing the definitive source of data on what wheel and tyre combinations are suitable for the A2...

Will 205/50/16 fit ok. (within the wheel arch, no rubbing etc) .... i didn't see them on the original list.

As a follow up, what would be the best size to fit to a 16" mk1 TT alloy, knowing that i want best compromise of tyre benefits.

two of the tires have nearly new tread 205/50R16, so was thinking just to replace the other two...would the 205/50R16's be ok, or should i just scrap the two and get 4 new at 195/50R16.

Bearing in mind i am not flush with cash :)

people with TT 16" wheels which I believe are wider than the A2's 16" SE alloys. There are members using 205/50/16 on TT wheels, i seem to recall some even on the SE 16". I think 205 is a little too wide for the SE 16 but fine on the TT as at 195/50/16 SE alloys, it already has a slight overhang on the side wall giving kerb protection and comfort over standard size 185/50. Although 195/50/16 tend to have a higher load index than 195/45/16 which may mean softer side wall on the 45s so comfort may counter/balance out, I haven't tried 45s.

Also, at 205/50/16, your speedo will be overreading, you're likely to be travelling faster than the speedo. 185/50/16 it underreads a little, at 195/50/16 mine is reading almost exactly as the Sat Nav at 70mph on straight motorways.
