The Green Goddess

Well,.........the love affair continues with the fsi and i say that, genuinely, still owning a few of Audis finest cars of the nineties from the turbine smooth V6's to the legendary 5cyl quattro S6's all superb in their own right. However, owning the fsi is anything but a disappointment in this company, the fsi positively fizzes way above it's engine size should allow in the way it delivers the goods. How this car feels like it has a supercharger from extreme low revs is beyond me? Well not quite, as it has to be the clever fsi technology that's responsible, more in a bit.

So Pine Green has travelled 20k pampered miles in our ownership, mileage being held back these last 2 1/2 + months by "The Virus". She's had 4 oil changes since, last one carried out earlier this week by me. I like doing my own oil changes as there's no pressure to put back the drain plug, as my time is free to allow every last drop of oil to drain out.

It's been on my mind to order new plugs, so whilst the bonnet was of i checked them to find they were fine but you could tell the Denso iridiums have been in there for a good while. Even though i had no reason to change them, i wanted to see what a plug change would do and wanted to stick with the Denso and try this new design.

Wow, what a difference these have made! As i said previously, how this car has the right to pull so well even from low revs is beyond me. The car positively fizzes even with the slightest touch of the gas pedal, it's an absolute joy to drive a car that pulls so well - rapidly pulling as if it's connected to an elastic band without pushing the pedal further. This fsi never disappoints me, it's a fun car to drive that excites yet can easily achieve 50+ mpgs on long runs, a great all - round package in my opinion and a car i intend to keep for a long time.

Pic below form last August at our favourite fish and chip shop Swanage, always a great meal after the drive from home.

Before i forget, October last year, Timmus ( Tom ) performed his magic in making a new loom and installing the brand new Bose speakers and amp i managed to get my hands on, he also installed colour diss while he was at it. Very pleased, is an understatement, with these upgrades performed by perfectionist Tom, he needs no introduction as many of you know.

What next? looking forward to picking up the pdc rear bumper as soon as Wales opens up.

:)

Mark, stop it! :D You're stoking the temptation for me to get an FSI, for which I'd have to sell one of my diesels

Seriously nice car though, I've always admired it when I've seen it in the flesh. That it's so rewarding to drive too can only increase that ?

Thanks Ian, go on, super smooth, a quick car that will excite you and put one of these on your chops. :D

We should all be on a mission to save as many of these as possible, even if it means digging in the pocket. Perversly when it all comes good the feeling of satisfaction becomes greater. ?

Cheers and beers. ?

Probably does not make much difference but I was under the impression from what I remember reading that the four pole (prong) spark plug was integral to the way FSI injectors are programmed to deleliver fuel.

I thought the FSI needed the 4 pole spark plugs

I thought the FSI needed the 4 pole spark plugs

I would be surprised if this makes that much difference, as only 1 of the 4 prongs actually sparks at any one time; the 4 prongs just reduce the errosion of the electrode. I have found on other engines that iridium plugs can make a noticable difference and the thin/hard iridium lasts much longer, keeping a consistent gap & spark for longer. I expect this is especially true with the FSI when running in lean burn mode, as a leaner mixture is harder to ignite (so will benefit from a better/more consistent spark).

Another small update but a worthwhile one.

I decided to hang back from changing the new coils i bought from Crew Audi last year, in order to evaluate the plug change in isolation.

The coils i pulled out were not as old as the car all dated 2008 and still running perfectly which as far as i can tell isn't mentioned in the history, more testament to how well this car has been looked after. The engine has smoothed out just that little bit more and even quieter to boot all down to now having an as new ignition system. Yes, this is an enthusiast owned car where time and money aren't relevant only the grin factor.Needless to say the car is a delight to drive.

It's that time of year again holidaying down in Swanage with the A2.

We've recently returned from the annual end of August holiday in Swanage and happily the Bournmouth Air festival was on again this year which is always a highlight.

The fsi is always looked after mechanically but gets a lot of attention whilst away cleaning and fettling as it's the only time the car is standing still for a whole week. Sad i know but i do enjoy it as i can leisurely just enjoy going over it with a fine tooth combe.

The offending blemishes ( Proghound will remember ) on the passenger rear arch and rear bumper have now been painted properly and a perfect match so i'm pleased, hope the pictures convey this. She's had another service by me and shortly will get the brake fluid pressure blead along with 2 new abs looms. The looms would have been replaced on holiday but thats another story as they never arrived on time. The headlights have been professionally refurbed as they were letting down the car and are now crystal clear so well pleased. The wheels are in original unrestored condition but will get refurbed as soon as time and access allows and i still need to add the new number plates with the nice A2OC plate surrounds.

Waiting for the gaffer to come out of this shop with the finest fish and chips left of pic just visible, bet the diners looking out the window were pleased when i introduced them the even better view of the A2 instead of the rolling sea. Lol

When clean just couldn't resist a quick shot, fish and chips on board ready for the table a mile away.

Took this one in very low light after polishing and waxing just for fun as it's a bit different with it's unmistakable A2 styling. :)

Believe me, it's difficult to catch photos like this of the Red Arrows, think Karen did well here on an old iPhone7.

Bad news for the post but good to see you posting again Mark. Hope you are all keeping well mate.

I posted here as it's really urgent, i need a quick response rather than the post i put in wanted which will only be seen if people wonder over to that part of the forum. Thank you Daren i'm keeping well 🤞, always a gentleman and appreciated mate.

Hello Mark,

Ive seen this pipe in question repaired in an aftermarket style on a fellow members FSI recently. Hopefully Ben @bleng will be along to show you his modification and explain what he used to achieve a water tight solution that kept the vehicle in action.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks Tom for this information, i do hope Ben comes along soon or i get a replacement pipe asap as my son will be very extremely disappointed to miss our trip to the river Wye this coming weekend. Thanks again Cheers Mark.

Big thanks goes out to A2Steve for supplying the water hose needed to get us to the Wye above Hereford Saturday. Hose arrived Wednesday fitted latter that evening and tested over the next two days. It was something planned a while ago which wouldn't only have affected us but one of Anglings biggest stars of "Passion for Angling" aired on BBC2 in 1993 who's water we were fishing. I wouldn't have posted any of this up but it's part off the story all down to one tiny water hose. Thanks again forum for coming to the rescue! :)👍

Well it was inevitable that Pine Green would need some serious money spending on her sooner rather than later. A new set of Continental Contact eco 5's - 185/50 16" and a genuine new NOX sensor from tradition has left not much change from a bag of sand this last week. Can't complain since we've owned the car 5 1/2 years now and 50k miles, apart from a fairly big spend at the start, Lower inlet manifold, injectors, thermostat, shocks, top mounts and drop links and cam belt kit twice she's only needed oil and filter changes and a couple water hoses.

Big thanks to Rick for sorting out the Nox sensor, it's made a massive difference to the way the car drives as it's not been right for a few months now.The car pulled very well when bought, nox sensor was fine, but this new one has elevated it to another level, there's no doubt a new one makes a big difference over one that just works. Can't believe how quiet these Contact eco 5's are too. Bumps are smoothed over very nicely yet the handling is still impressive for such a tyre - very pleased.

Changing a Nox sensor (22mm open ended spanner) on these isn't too difficult at all, the worst part being getting the connector in the car and routed under the ECU cradle and getting the sensor over the heatshield which involved removing six bolts to lower the shield and unbolting the cradle making routing the connector to its ecu a doddle. Fsi motoring just got a whole lot more fun, might even treat her to another set of iridiums even though they were only changed roughly 25k ago. 🙂
