If you have a space saver and have not tried inflating it, or have not got a space saver, you are missing one of the most amazing sights I have ever seen.:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Have just e-mailed pics of the space saver inflated to Stuart for the web site. It grows in both dimensions and side walls fold out of the midddle. When you let it down it just folds itself back up. Incredible and full marks to Vredenstein.

I now always travel with mine inflated as after two flat tyres I got sick having to call the RAC out to inflate the wheel etc etc... the inflated wheel fits as normal as well...

Thanks for this Ian! And for emailing me the part numbers! Brilliant. I sent it to Martyn and he is pricing it at the moment... But what is that big round black disk? It is not on Martyn's parts sketch. Do you need it? I have not seen that before when at the dealer. Does it fit to the top or bottom of the wheel?

It sits under the wheel - presumably to protect the boot floor from having a large circular groove cut in it by the spare, it has five fingers that project up into the bolt holes in the wheel - you could probably use a piece of hardboard. I realised after I had put the car back together that I had not made a note of the part number, will get the number for the disc and the fastening tonight. Bag does not appear to have a part number.

If your dealer provided this as the "no cost option" it should have included all the bits, not just the wheel. The wheel should be fastened down as it is not exactly the best thing to have flying around inside the car in an accident.

I have just compared my photo with Stevo's photograph of the battery compartment on the web site - same page. The arrangement is different and if your arrangement is like his the bracket may not fit - the cutout at the side of the battery (boot lid side) where the bracket goes down to the bottom of the battery cutout looks a different shape.

I had not realised that you do not get the bracket unless you get the space saver so you will also need the fixings - two hex socket screws for the topb/back and two bolts for the bottom/front. At least the two holes for the hex screws appear to be there in Stevo's photo. If you need dimensions of the fastenings let me know.

... which is exactly why I want to do this bracket! Mine has been flying around the boot for nearly 2 years now!!! (And yes it has left a nice round indent in the carpet where it lives most on the left hand side... :D)

I'll check the bracket details again... I;m sure that when I went to the Audi dealer a while ago the two threaded openings at the top of the battery was used for the bracket. BOTH these went through the floor to the round disk thing you have attached to your wheel. There was no black plastic backing plate. So there are TWO systems of spare wheel fixing out there I think...

Can anyone else with a different system confirm this?

With the bracket in place and the floor down all you see is the single fixing on the bracket through the hole in the floor. The plastic disc lays on the boot floor centred on this hole (loose). The wheel sits on this (inside up forming a useful storage area for de-icer etc) with the single fixing (bolt with large plastic head) which passes trhough the wheel and spacer and screws into the hole in the bracket. This is a set distsnce from the side of the boot so you may have to carry it de-flated to get it in. None of the bracket fixings are visible with the floor down, just the single fixing for the wheel. See photos.

p.s. This may seem a silly question but do you have a compressor in the car?

Not a silly question at all: I do have a compressor that lives under the the driver's feet (due to BOSE amp in the boot next to battery)... so I can inflate the space saver myself I know! It is just the whole palaver of jacking the car up, taking ages to inflate it etc etc... far easier to phone Audi Assist and have a coffee as you wait for them to come and do it with a proper compressor!

Normally a space saver spare is NARROWER than a normal tyre - thus giving you a deeper boot. This one is as wide as normal (undoubtedly better when in use around corners). So it makes no sense being not inflated to me as per a normal spare... it saves hardly any space as you can't really use the space AROUND the spare... (I do use the inside at the moment as well for the oil and windscreen wash as you do!) You need it to be narrower to have a deeper boot to be a real space saver... this one is a funny hybrid IHHO...
