Chat The project needs some work !!!!!!!

I noticed a strange "thumping" noise from the nearside front wheel when going reasonably quickly around a roundabout.

It was a strange noise, just a thump every revolution of the wheel.

I think I have figured out what the cause is. I have ultra low profile tyres on the car 35 section 18"s (Very skinny, a bit like elastic bands!!)

That is not the cause but I also have flush fitting tyre valveson them. The vale therefore is inside the wheel rather than outside it. so it extends an inch or so inside the wheel. on harsh cornering the weight is all on the wheel and the side wall flexes a little (only a little because of the skinny side wall) but that is enough for th vale to hit the inside of the compressed tyre!!!

A strange problem, but understandable.

That is not that serious a fault and is easily fixed by fitting stubby external valves (standard ones would stick out too much)

The problem is that while the car was up in the air, my mate (a very experienced tyre specialist) had a good look around the car. He spotted a few expensive issues!!!

The front nearside CV joint was worn (not the source of the noise, just a coincidence)
The rear spring has snapped (no symptoms noticed !!!)
The suspension bushed in the rear axle need replacing (that would also explain why tyres catch slightly on some corners sometimes on the outer arch and sometimes on the inner tub (I thought it was only on the inner until it was inspected.
The gearbox is leaking.
The turbo appears to be leaking oil (hopefully not a sign that it needs replacing!!)

So a costly list!

It has probably forced my arm over one thing, that is the rear disc conversion, while the rear end is stripped down for the work I might s well do the conversion any way!!

I will post a wanted advert for a FSI or TDI 90 rear axle complete.

I won't be uprating the suspension in any way, I will use standard Sport springs (new OEM) and shocks. The reason being that the Sport is giving me exactly the right combination of firm and controlled ride.

I just wish I had the money left to be able to afford this, but I haven't so a bit of financial engineering is called for!!!!

Hope all that work doesn't mean you qon't be able to attend ADI?
Why not get the Monroe shocks when they are still available on Amazon. Didn't I read somewhere that Monroe made the standard shocks on A2's anyway so it is sort of OEM anyway.

Unless the work is not complete in time I will be at ADI. I will try to get it done well in advance so there is no clash.

As for the shocks, the suspension characteristics are exactly as I want them, firm without being harsh and comfortable enough, so I don't want to change that.

Hi Steve,

you are right, as I said I am more than happy with the standard suspension, so I will be replacing the springs and shocks like for like.

The only upgrading I will be doing will be to upgrade from standard drums to discs (standard callipers but slotted discs and ceramic pads)

Well I can't recommend the ceramic pads and powerdiscs highly enough. Now that they have bedded in the braking is great.

Best break the piggybank with all that work Steve.

Agreed. They're really good and look the biz. I'll forward Steve the supplier details I bought from. If you're doing the rear axle conversion the front and rear ATE grooved and coated discs plus ceramic pads came in at 170 quid which I thought was very reasonable

Thanks Murdo,

That does seem to be great value.

Cheers

Hope you get it sorted soon mr .B .. gutted for you .... have the mot on both our cars so keeping the fingers firmly crossed ...

Thanks for that.

Even though the car has been impeccably maintained and with a low mileage (70k). This is all just fair wear and tear.
It is only the timing of the expenditure that is a pain.

Onwards snd upwards though. I have found a FSI rear axle to recondition (£80) and so everything should be ok when it is finished.
Just need a FSI or 90 handbrake mechanism now.

Plus new discs, callipers, pads, shocks, springs, bushes etc etc !!!

A leaky turbo will not get better - mine is definitely in need of replacement - had to put a litre of oil in the engine this week.
I've now got a spare turbo ready for refurbishment which will then be swapped over - hopefully should minimise time off the road.

Hi Dan

thanks for the input.

I I am lucky at the moment, the oil consumption is negligable.

But I will keep a close eye on it now.

Cheers

What about the 42 litre fuel-tank too, Steve? (Unless you already have this fitted?) It would be an ideal time to fit the larger tank ...

Hi David
yes that is a good idea, but fortunately mine already has that, it was just about built at the right date.

Thanks anyway
