Where do you get new SKF driveshafts for 80gbp? Do you need to send the old one back?
I found it on ebay. No requirement to return the old one. The same seller seems to have increased the price now up to approx 110GBP:

But as menno points out, this particular drive shaft might not be the right one.

@Menno , I tried to read the Dutch thread, but didnt quite get what was the end result and conclusion? My new SKF drive shaft has approx 500mm length when I measure it, so things look bad for me I guess.

@Joga the conclusion was that SKF is saying it's the correct one and did not want to alter or state that it is the incorrect P/N for an A2.
A lot of communication by mail an phone followed with supplier's and SKF, but they didn't want to know about it or change the faulty information.

Probably it's a drive shaft for a Polo or similar platform.
The owner returned the shaft, and installed the old one in the end.

It was going to be replaced because of vibration and the shaft was suspicious for this.
The old shaft itself was not defective, and the option was to replace both of the CV joints as an alternative and keep the correct length....... Although there was no follow up on this.

I'm sorry to be a messenger of bad news, but it would be a bummer to have a lot of work on it, and would be after all for nothing.

Thanks for the information. I am right now waiting in a phone line at SKF customer support to get their side of this. Might have to wait for next week as they probably have gone for the weekend. :(

I can confirm that this SKF drive shaft does not correspond to the original one, front left and for AUA/BBY.

?
I think the failure with my present drive shaft is the splines to the outer joint, so I am afraid the shaft is unsaveable. But a good thought, thanks.

There must have been water ingress or not? There's no other way an axle can be butchered like that if it was greased and sealed properly?!

Say, is it an option to go to the breakers again and buy the shaft, check it, install it and happy day's?

All looked well greased. I am considering my options now, but no obvious way forward yet. Hmm. Repair is not an option though, rather exchange to a new or used shaft.

it certainly look like there is twisting of the splines, whilst the 1.4 may not produce a massive amount of torque my remap does get to 240ib ft and if you a vialant with the clutch enough times that amount of torque will eventually do some damage
I agree thought that shaft is scrap

@Menno I think you had a point there, about water ingress. I brushed the splines causing quite some rust clouds, and in addition some corrosion traces can be seen:

Cant for my life see how water could enter, except if a prevoius owner had been drivning with a damaged joint boot and the changed it. Because now the boot was undamaged and the joint well filled with grease.

I think I found a clue to why I sense engine bay smells in the cabin sometimes in SHE.
