Thinking of buying FSI Sport

I've just been to test drive an Fsi Sport model and I found the ride a bid hard. The roads I drove on were very bumpy though. I wondered if anyone who has had one for a while could tell me how they are getting on with it. Does it get on your nerves after a while? I would only use it for a 6 mile round trip to work each day and a 200 mile round trip down the motorway at weekends. Has anyone experienced both the sport and the SE? Can you tell me if the SE is much softer? Also is £12.5k the right price for an 03 plate with 7.5k on the clock?
Thanks for your help

Hi Popeye,

Welcome to the forum. I drive an SE now, and have had a loan Sport on two occasions now; during my short drives, I found the Sport a little harsh compared to the SE. However saying this, it does come down to your own expectations and limits, as many of the Sport owners on the forum are very happy with the ride. Regarding the price, depends on the spec really - does it have many options? I ask this, as if it is std, then I wouldn't pay more than 11k (but I'm tight)

Hi Popeye
See my comments regarding 1.4SE versus 1.6 FSI Sport on the '38 - 42' fuel consumption topic. Yes the Sport ride is harsher but I think it is mostly down to the wheels and tyres as the Sport has slightly bigger wheels and lower profile tyres than on the 1.4 SE. On balance to date I preferred the ride on the 1.4 SE. On value the way to get a good idea of trade and retail values: try what I did : log on to <www.glass.co.uk> and put in all the extras that are on the car, its age and mileage, then pay £2.95 and you will get a full price breakdown. I used my quote as a good way to get top trade-in on the 1,4 SE when I swapped it for my new(ish) 1.6 FSI Sport. That hasn't got on my nerves yet!!! Time will tell and so will I. Regards Rich-dada

Thanks for your comments chaps! I'm going to try an SE and a Mercedes A class before I decide. I see they have both scored well for reliability in the JD Power survey in this months What car? which was another of my concerns.
Cheers

A2 every time. The A class is old design (been around since S reg) and the interior is not nice at all.

The A class was being built at a time when MB quality had reached an all time low in many motoring press articles. Still better than others maybe, but not what you would expect from a Merc.

The A class will be replaced in a year or so. OK, the A2 may only be around for a couple of more years but still looks better in 5 years time!

That's right, I've seen photos of the new A class in one of the magazines so its arrival is imminent. Nothing to write home about though.

A2 has won many awards for design and will be an investment - Merc - no chance. I compared Sport with SE (I used to drive a BMW 325i with Hartge suspension) and sport is poor for following bumpy roads (wheel skip). Go for SE and then buy 17 inch wheels and sell the 16" to someone with 15" ones! NB FSi suspension is uprated compared to 1.4, by this I mean they put in variable rate springs. In practice they are soft for small movement then hard for anything above.

Thanks for your advice everyone! I have been out today and bought myself a 1.4 TDI SE. I found the SE suspension much easier on the bones! I didnt test drive an A class. I went to the Mercedes direct dealer near me and they were all filthy inside and out and the sales staff made me feel like I was keeping them from something more important so I left. I found an independant garage on the internet that had an A2 in the spec I wanted and suprisingly in the colour I would have chosen if buying new (Dolphin Grey). Its an 02 plate with 30k on the clock and I'm picking it up on Friday! Now I just need to sort out one of those ice link leads for my Ipod!![24]

Well done!

Just out of interest, this MB dealer-wasn't in Norwich was it?

I looked at A class there-all filthy inside......and they were not new arrivals.
