Yes and it is worrying me a little. the underbonnet layout is very different so it is certainly not a straight swap for an AMF to BHC conversion.

It is at times like this that i am thinking " i should have followed my own advice and always check the chassis number!!!!!

i will ask my mechanic to text me the chassis number from the car and keep my fingers crossed!!!!!

99.9% of people wouldn't have checked the chassis number on a £300 car Steve so I wouldn't worry about it. In what way does it look different? Engine cover? Perhaps its just a polo tdi engine. I've still got your mobile number Steve so could whatsapp/text you a picture of the engine in my BHC engined A2 lunchtime if that helps!

Notjust tge engine cover but everything else is located differently to an AMF.
There are the BHC pipes tgst go yo a unit above where the webasto is on an esrler car. The ABS is located furtger forward.
The differences are not just on the engine but the ancillaries too.

Never having had a BHC engined car before i dudn't recognise much at all when i lifted the bonnet.

Even our daughter's 2004 has an AMF (possibly built before the changeover and registered after?)

So it was quite a shock when i lifted the bonnet.

No, but it is a coincidence that you mention wheeler dealers.

The guy who is their technical adviser (Paul Brackley) used to work for me as a mechanic in my "custom car / hot rod" showroom back in the 90's.

I emailed him last week to suggest the A2 as a brilliant car for them to have in one of their shows.

He agreed wholeheartedly but unfortunately since the show has moved to the States they can't cover it (it wasn't really offered in the States.) Also he ssid that there are no plans for any more UK shows!!!! (That is disappointing)

So we literally "missed the boat".
How cool would it have been to see an A2 on that show.

But Paul is still quite active in car programmes and so he will do what he can.

Sorry for the swerve Steve - just trying to offer a bit of cheer !. Ive just been looking at Google images for BHC engine bays without much luck. Ive always thought that "wheeler dealers" doing an A2 would be a great idea too !. :)

Hi Steve, thanks for that.

The car is not here are the moment but the left hand side (as you look at the picture) doesn't seem the same there is something just under the left wing that I haven't noticed on any of our 6 other tdis.
Jut got the log book and it is showing that the engine is an AMF (or t least it WAS an AMF)

So it might just be that it still has the AMF engine and it is just something unfamiliar lurking in that area that I simply haven't seen before.

I should get the VIN and engine numbers later, that will help.

If it is the original engine it certainly doesn't feel like it has done nearly a quarter of a million miles!!!

I am a little less worried thanks to your pictures, but it is still a little bit of a mystery.

It looks like it was just me again.

The vast majority (if not all) of my TDis have been post 2003 and so I simply didn't expect to see the webasto so obvious on the droiver's inner wing (I thought it was lower down.).

The 2001 that we had for over 6 years never had the bonnet off.

So it is simply just that I didn't recognise the earlier bonnet layout pre late 2003!

So panic over, it is just an early AMF layout with what looks like an newish Webasto.

It is nearly ready from its, service, brakes, cambelt kit etc. I should get it back midweek.

Hi,

Some pictures of it before it goes to the paint shop, but after the replacement door has been fitted (awaiting the silver door blades to be fitted).

I am not sure if you can see that some of the bonnet lacquer has stayed ON.

Red Audis always seem to suffer from laquer peel but this was the worst I have seen.

My friendly paint and body man has offered to sort out the peel on the bonnet, repaint it and the front bumper and fit the replacement door shell, all for a Steve B price of £300, which is pretty fair I think.

Here is the car at its worst (still a bargain for £300)

I suspect that the bonnet has been resprayed before, to have that much peel on that and no so much elsewhere, indicates that the bonnet was probably sprayed separately.

Thats red cars for you Steve, terrible for oxidisation under the lacquer, can't see anything that won't cover easy enough though..
 
Another A2 rescued!!!

This is the TDI I bought for my Grandson at the princely sum of £300

(compare this shot to the "before" pictures)

This one shows the bargain SE wheels (thank you Max) now refurbished
The replacement door (which was already i the right colour - Amulet red) the original was badly dented
And the silver "door blades" I had sitting in the loft (I like the effect of these and they are just painted)

Inside it has the dark grey "Swing" heated leather seats bought from Sarge (thanks) and with the loom and cubby hole mount for the switches all sorted By Tom (Timmus) Thanks, and some free door panels from A2Steve for which I am very grateful.

The car has had a full service, Cambelt, new brakes, drop links and springs (rear) etc. thanks to my friendly mechanic who sorted out a good price for the work.

The paintwork (Bonnet and front bumper) was repainted, a replacement driver's door fitted (I bought it from Prestige) The rest of the Paintwork was polished and the wheels were refurbished at a bargain price (from my friendly painter) total he charged for all this was £500 !!!

So all in all my Grandson now has a very nice and usable A2 TDI to learn to drive in, and another A2 is saved.

That pleases me on so many levels!!

Yes, I am lucky to have a great painter (he did the colour change on my car and then my wife's)
My mechanic has also carried out LOTS of work across the 7 TDIs we have in the family. So he gives me a healthy discount.
Sarge and others help too, with great prices.

Yes, there are still one or two things to do including the screws etc.
There are missing Jacking point covers too and the sills need a good clean.

As you know a project is very rarely finished.

I thought I would take it for an MOT and I was sure that something would cause a fail.

I was right BUT all it failed on was two ball joint dust covers. (The ball joints themselves were fine)

So if you are worried about high mileage A2s, this is at least one example where there is plenty of life left even after 229,000 miles! and there are others on here with mega mileage A2s still going strong too.
