Ticking/clinking then red oil can symbol. 1.6fsi

So, on a 100 mile journey today. 30 miles in, got a ticking/ clinking sound from engine then red oil can lamp symbol on dash. Pulled over and took bonnet off. Bearing in mind I was on the M4 westbound toward Swansea. Lots of heat coming from engine, with a little bit of steam/ smoke? Then i noticed that coolant reservoir was empty. I had checked the coolant yesterday and put about half a litre in as it was below minimum. Checked oil this morning before journey and looked ok. Made sure I was on the flat when checked and there was oil on dipstick. Dipstick not broken and had painted end of stick with a paint pen so I could actually see the level.
So, I had a 2 litre bottle of water and started putting that into reservoir. Water started spitting bubbling out of reservoir but also started dropping on level. Put nearly 1.5 litres in and watched the level dropping in reservoir. No water under the car or in under tray but seemed to be spitting/ vaporising just to the left and lower down from reservoir. I have had an Intermittent orange oil sensor light coming on for last 2 weeks but have been ignoring it as oil level has been ok and light has been going out. Car is 2003 1.6fsi. Coolant temp was at 90 when I pulled over. I presume the ticking/ clinking was over heating as the coolant went down. Got recovered to a mates garage after recovery £160 lighter and they'll have a look tomorrow. Emptied the car and carried on the journey in my wife's C1. Any ideas. After we dropped the car off with recovery the car was driven into the garage and low coolant warning came up on dash obviously. When I pulled over red oil can was on dash. Any ideas. Thanks in advance. Tony

My money is on a death pipe leak went nova. Sounds similar to what happened to me, no coolant pool underneath either, just evaporated on the hot block leaving an impressive smoke screen of steam behind.

I have exactly the same problem with one of my FSI's both oil symbol light & temp light come on, Death pipe for sure on mine. big job to change, may just sell it spares or repair.

That's what I was thinking. I will wait and see what the garage says. Will there have been damage to the engine. Or just see what the garage says.

Ok, garage has found a coolant pipe 8Z0 121052 item 26 on ekta holed. Pipe goes to coolant pump. Not available anymore from audi. Anyone know where I can get one. Thanks Tony

Disturbing this coolant pipe is now NLA and nothing used on ebay either, expect the used price to rocket to £100 on ebay in the near future. Potential to write off a car for lack of one little pipe! Best bet is used pipe from @A2Steve or @Clackers, beyond that a custom made replacement from a specialist supplier or get lucky and find old stock somewhere.

Incidentally the pipe does not go to the coolant pump and you are unlucky I've no memory of anyone else reporting a failure of this particular pipe.

All the coolant plastics are strange at this age, they’re brittle but soft at the same time. The FSI’s run hotter than your average petrol car and that higher temperature and pressure really effects the plastic moulded components (including thermostat housing).

Is that pipe part of the assembly (my FSI is long gone now, but I’ve got the pics of a hose that went on mine)

I can see it now, does it go to the thermostat housing?

Short answer, yes.

Longer answer, going by the 7zap diagram pipe 26 is the first leg of the run to the cabin heater matrix and is a FLOW pipe and therefore my brain insists in thinking of it as FROM the thermostat housing. It keeps you warm!

Pipe 26 connects onto the the fat pipe my thumb is resting on in this picture of the thermostat housing.

Thank you. I've ordered through this link. If I'd had the pipe diameters I could of ordered through ebay and got one of the silicone hoses but I'm away at the moment.
Could you possibly once you receive it, post the diameter so that We can order silicone ones on Ebay,
Cheers,
Ami
