The connection of pipe 26 with the thermostat housing.

The connection where pipe 26 connects to the Y-piece item 24.

There is a lip on all pipes, (not included in my measurements).

Your mechanic should be able to confirm these measurements these by measuring the old pipe.

Just had a refund from the place I ordered the hose from. Obviously not available. Will have to look at one of the ebay silicone reducers. The closest I can find is 25mm to 19mm. 1" to 3/4". Do you think that will be OK. Thanks

This looks ideal, the one's I looked at are 150mm long on each end, so assuming this is sufficient then it's worth a try. At under £10 it's much cheaper than the alternative from Audi (if you can find it).

I've ordered one in black, 25mm to 19mm. Looking at the drawing they are 150mm long on each elbow so 300mm overall and it looks like each extention is the same diameter from the bend. So just cut to size as the bigger diameter looks longer than the smaller one. Also quicker delivery than the company previously ordered from. And cheaper if it works.

So, on a 100 mile journey today. 30 miles in, got a ticking/ clinking sound from engine then red oil can lamp symbol on dash. Pulled over and took bonnet off. Bearing in mind I was on the M4 westbound toward Swansea. Lots of heat coming from engine, with a little bit of steam/ smoke? Then i noticed that coolant reservoir was empty. I had checked the coolant yesterday and put about half a litre in as it was below minimum. Checked oil this morning before journey and looked ok. Made sure I was on the flat when checked and there was oil on dipstick. Dipstick not broken and had painted end of stick with a paint pen so I could actually see the level.
So, I had a 2 litre bottle of water and started putting that into reservoir. Water started spitting bubbling out of reservoir but also started dropping on level. Put nearly 1.5 litres in and watched the level dropping in reservoir. No water under the car or in under tray but seemed to be spitting/ vaporising just to the left and lower down from reservoir. I have had an Intermittent orange oil sensor light coming on for last 2 weeks but have been ignoring it as oil level has been ok and light has been going out. Car is 2003 1.6fsi. Coolant temp was at 90 when I pulled over. I presume the ticking/ clinking was over heating as the coolant went down. Got recovered to a mates garage after recovery £160 lighter and they'll have a look tomorrow. Emptied the car and carried on the journey in my wife's C1. Any ideas. After we dropped the car off with recovery the car was driven into the garage and low coolant warning came up on dash obviously. When I pulled over red oil can was on dash. Any ideas. Thanks in advance. Tony
Forgot to say. Traffic cops/ highway officers turned up as they'd had a report there was a car on the side of motorway with its bonnet blown off.

So, happy to report that the car is back on the road. Ordered a silicone hose off ebay on Thursday and arrived at garage on Saturday morning. Garage was closed Saturday but delivered through their letterbox. Hose was cut to size and fitted this afternoon. Size was 25mm to 19mm, 90 degree reducer silicone hose. It was hose coming off the Y piece going to the thermostat housing.
Thanks for everyone's help.

Glad the car is back on the road. Many OEM parts are getting harder to find so aftermarket and generic parts are needed more often.

Not tempting fate but now is the time to check the condition of all the hoses and the death pipe. Sure that I read somewhere the death pipe should be replaced before 10 years.

Someone will need to start a database of generic rubber, silicone and plastic tubes that will work as suitable replacements on the A2 and include the manufacturer, part number, dimension and what it replaces.

I agree. It comes to something when you can't get a simple rubber hose from the manufacturer. It's the same with sensors and the like. Surely there are alternatives to original oem sensors. Why are the cars so sensitive to other makes or aftermarket. Is it some thing that Audi/vw has coded into the ecu the same thing as they've done with the diesel scandal.

Had a few issues with my FSI cooling system since purchasing, mainly the expansion tank venting coolant from what I thought was the cap, turned out to be the expansion tank itself, managed to fabricate a bracket and fit a Octavia bottle as it was £15 and I couldn’t find a new A2 bottle, plus it’s bigger so should be an upgrade

Also deleted the piping associated with the heating of the throttle body as this was also leaking

Will now be ordering some elbows off eBay to replace those and also plan to replace both hoses to the heater matrix.
Hopefully this helps someone

Thank you so much for confirming this - my wife bought my A2 back this mornign in a cloud of steam.. turns out this pipe had split.. no stock anywhere I could find, so this post has saved me so much time - thanks again.

Glad to of helped.

Interesting thread. My own A2 suffered a coolant failure and I am trying to get pipe 26. What is the death pipe as if this work is getting done I may get this replaced now also.

Pipe 26 is easy to replace if you get the pipe linked in the thread. It has to be cut to size and then fitted. The death pipe is a different matter. About a month after having pipe 26 replaced my death pipe went. Luckily I caught it in time and managed to get it to a garage as it had a small split which opened up when the engine was up to temperature. It's a plastic pipe that runs from the water pump to the thermostat on the back of the engine. If it goes In spectacular fashion, ie losing all your coolant then there is a chance of seizing your engine. With parts and labour it cost me £300. That was using a genuine audi pipe which was about £50 but you can get cheaper pattern ones for about £15. The biggest part of the cost is the labour as its a pig of a job to do but is doable by a home mechanic. I just don't have any where to work on the car other than on the street and I also live on a hill.
