Tetbury Audi was good enough to service my 2002 TDi earlier this week without making too many ****-ups (more than can be said for my previous experience of the Coventry and Oxford dealers, who won't get any more business from me). They were also good enough to tell me that as The Bug has now reached 59,700 miles, they wanted another fat fee for the timing belt to be changed.

Fair enough, these things have to be done...but what's everyone else's experience of dealer charges for this operation? Tetbury is quoting £350...

Good price. My dealer charged £450. I took it to my trusted independent and he looked it up in his bible. He needed NINE special tools to do it of which he only had 2 so he declined to do it for me for any less... and with such an important thing I'd stick to Mr Audi doing it. That way it is also firmly logged in the car's computerised log system.

Nine tools for a cambelt change, some masterpiece of design. Gone are the days when a box full of spanners and the occasional special tool (hired from a friendly garage)would completely overhaul a car. Oh I forgot and the kitchen table, I spilled a gallon of graphite grease (suitably melted on the stove) on the kitchen floor, 'er indoors couldn't see the funny side of it, strange that.
