Timing belt

Got my local indy to do the timing belt on my wife's A2. £302 (but I purchased parts!) This is for 1.4 TDI (75PS). I got water-pump changed as a matter of course and replaced auxilliary belt and thermostat.

Water-pump, timing belt, auxilliary belt and thermostat were £100 for parts.

My fizzy had not been done since 2015 (previous owners😱) and some 45k miles. The mechanic left all parts in boot once job was concluded, must say it was in really good condition, still would not have know as belt is hidden (out of sight) in engine. As Steve says, always get the belt changed, if only for piece of mind👍

The reason I asked:
I had my belt+ all other bits associated done last Thursday.
Vehicle had not had a belt change in 12 years.
On inspection, belt was actually fine.
However both the pump and idler roller/pulley were feeling rough when rotated and noisy/gritty.
So, good to change.
Cheers.

Thats a new record!
How many miles between changes?

Thanks all.
I was thinking Tdi...
cheers.
The 5 years is based on how the belt ages, or is expected to last, I think the same applies to petrol engine belts as diesel belts, same materials, same sort of load etc. For every belt that has lasted for ever, there's one that didn't, and a repair bill to prove it.
Mac.

In fairness the PD timing belts last very well, my gut tells me 10 years 80k however i bottled it and changed mine close to 8 years and around 51k, looked ok'ish but its a personnal choice in my opinion, certainly a sad day if it fails and could more than likely cube the car and that must be avoided!!

I got my A2 1.4 petrol a couple of months ago and it has FSH but had no record of the Cambelt being changed. As it was 20 years old and had 88k miles I got it booked in and it appeared it was the original belt etc
I was very lucky I am all for preventative maintenance....

I had mine done on 1.4 petrol AUA after 13 years and only 20.000 km. All rollers/pulleys were in great condition, including pulley for accessories belt. There were small cracks visible when complettely bending the bigger timing belt, the rest was in great condition.

Anyone able or willing to give a masterclass on belt changing?
Just thinking many on here have more than one A2...It would save us a great amount if we had the confidence/knowledge to do this task.
I don't see it as being difficult, but it is a job we need to do.
Anyone...??.....

I would need to check if the instructions for this are in 1.4 Audi service manual. Although not really space travell difficulty it is also not a trivial work. I had it done by a mechanic and was helping him, I would not really like to do the job myself. Maybe, if I had few cars, I might go this route, but for one car it was not worth it for me to invest time and money into the specific tools.
Also, if you do it wrong, you will need new engine ;).

I have checked and in service manual for 1.4 petrol engine (AUA, BBY) there is a whole section how to replace all pulleys, timing, accessories belt, etc. Complete with instructions, pictures, tools, etc...

Hi Donp, there are quite a few videos on YouTube for the procedure, not specifically for an A2 but the process is the same.
