Timmus Audi A2 Upgrades, Retrofits and Repairs

Greetings to all A2 owners,

For over a decade, I have been upgrading and repairing A2s. Having dedicated myself to just one model of car, I have intimate, specialised knowledge of the vehicle we all love. Countless reviews and recommendations are scattered across the pages of this forum. My hope is that, with incremental revisions, this thread will give A2 owners a clear and condensed overview of the services that I provide and how I deliver them.

Below is an overview of the range of services that I offer for the Audi A2.

Retrofitting of Optional Extras

Not all A2s were made equal. Retrofitting is the process of adding original Audi optional extras that were available from factory but were not fitted to a particular car. With the exception of the OpenSky sunroof and climate control, I can retrofit all of the original factory options, plus many others. If you've seen it in another A2, I can add it to yours. It'll be just like your A2 left the factory with that option...

Electrical Diagnostics, Services and Repairs

I have a complete understanding of the A2's electrical systems and have great experience of diagnosing and repairing most electrical problems.

Who Am I?

Timmus was originally a childhood nickname, born from my sister's early attempts to say 'Thomas'. Upon joining A2OC, back when A2s were first starting to appear on the second-hand market, my nickname seemed a suitable choice of username. Even when I was building models as a young boy, I showed an enthusiastic desire to improve and innovate. Studying physics and engineering at university honed my understanding and developed in me the skills necessary to innovate and improve in line with established principles and with a due respect for correctness, caution and consideration.
I soon found that my understanding of the A2's electrics was an asset to the club. My lifelong and apparently innate fixation on detail and desire for the very highest standards of neatness, efficiency and safety has meant that I have acquired a reputation in the club for factory-standard perfectionism. I am known not just for my meticulousness and painstaking care for the work that I do, but also for my honesty, flexibility, cooperativeness and integrity with the people for whom I work.

Accessing My Services

I'm based near Lancaster, just off M6 J34. My workshop is where a majority of my work is performed, and everyone is welcome to visit me by appointment. I'm sometimes to be found at 'satellite stations' in the Midlands and the South East. I also perform work on A2s at A2OC social events, where suitable/appropriate.
Very occasionally, I also do 'retrofitting tours', where I travel between multiple A2 owners to deliver upgrade and repair requests at owners' homes or places of work. Please note that I do not drive for individual jobs; it’s much easier to bring your A2 to my workshop than to bring my workshop to your A2.
For Central European owners, I'm happy to travel/fly. I also have a base in The Hague, which serves A2 owners in the BeNeLux region.

Please be aware that I am my own secretary and that I can struggle to reply to private messages promptly when work is busy. Rest assured, no message goes unanswered and I will get back to you. Thanks for your patience.

My list of services is always increasing, and I will continue to update and expand this thread as needed.

Warm regards to all,

Tom

Hi Stan, thanks for the reply. My 1.4 tdi was running without any problems until a couple of weeks ago I was packed and ready to go to Porthcawn for a weekend with Friends, the battery was dead. Fortunately I have friends, one one lifted out my dud battery (I can’t do that) and loaned me a spare. I drove 140miles to Wales, I did notice as I crossed the Brecon Beacons the DashCam failed but there were no warnings on the instruments that there was a fault. The same happened after I had charged the car and drove home, I took it to my local garage who could not find any fault, the battery was charging, I thought it was a temporary fault that had gone away. A couple of days later I had my own 6 month old battery back, fully charged and working well. I am ultra careful to ensure every switch, indicator and plug in device is turned off when I park, I now unplug the battery and use my battery tester before plugging it back in. My knowledge of electronics was limited to getting my girl friend to touch the ht lead when I kickstarted my BSA Road Rocket in 1958, my ex girlfriend has a very poor opinion of me.
Same here on electrics & electronics.
I have seen a few YouTube videos on electrical parasitic drains. It is odd trying to find intermittent issues or like you have with the battery just going dead. It would be good if it was just a simple issue like a boot or interior light staying on. Hope you solve it soon and let's us know what it ends up being.

After several weeks of no car with flat battery problems I have at last had good news, my garage were unable to fix it until they checked my Dash Cam, even switched off it was draining the battery, unplugging it has solved the problem (I hope) of course Sods Law stepped in and I can no longer lock the rear doors or the boot, I naturally searched the Forum and found the exact same problem there.oh joy I thought and eagerly sought the answer that will save further terminal damage to my wallet, the best answer was in German, I can count up to three in German. I won’t give up, I’m an A2 owner. I’ve got a bus pass.

Hello Salvatore,

The A2 was made with two generations of stereo: Gen1 and Gen2.
The physical plastic connectors for Gen1 and Gen2 are the same. However, the electrical arrangement of these connectors is different. A2s had to be wired at the factory either for a Gen1 stereo or for a Gen2 stereo. They are not cross-compatible.

Based on the limited information available to me, I suspect that you are trying to fit a Gen1 stereo in an A2 that is wired for Gen2 stereos.

I am able to convert the wiring from Gen1 to Gen2, or from Gen2 to Gen1. However, if your A2 is already wired for Gen2 stereos, I would question the logic of installing a Gen1 stereo.

Ultimately, what is it that you are trying to achieve? What is it that you want to gain from the change?

All the best,

Tom

Hi Tom

Wondered if you could help, I’ve got an A2 1.6 FSI. I. have a number of electrical issues and would like to get them sorted. Issues include, remote locking not working, rear boot not locking and cigarette lighter not working.

I’ve also get a rev counter that constantly flutters, although this could be due to a a faulty cylinder?

I can get to Lancaster, as based in Manchester, thanks Gareth
