Today I.....

I had this too - not sure why the pads dont extend - I've tried pagid, Brembo (all be it I think they are the same company) but they all seem to be the same leading to having to change discs and pads way too often. Im on my third set of discs in 3 years.

I was told to grind off the lip on my disks to make them better, is that bad advice?

The reason you grind / linish (sand) off the lip is that any replacement pad might not be exactly the same shape as the previous one that has worn the lip.

Disc's will usually have a minimum thickness marked upon them. You need this plus a further amount to allow for another pad's-worth of wear.

So, if the disc's merely lipped, is well within tolerance and isn't overly grooved or scored, it's perfectly fine to take off the lip (I use a flap disc in the grinder: only takes ten mins both sides of both discs), and pop in a new set of pads. Looks an awful sight better as well.

The disks used wear very little compared to the pads but then asbestos was banded and the new material needed metal fragments fixed in with the asbestos free friction material. As a result the discs now wear much quicker
I normally work on one set of disks to two sets of pads
Only good bit is the disks are VERY cheap these days compared to what they once cost to the point that it would cost more to reface them than buying new disks(as Scot stated above) plus there is a minimum thickness that needs to be observed (as special edition as already stated)
Follow my rule of new disks every two sets of pads. If there is a lip after the first set of pads it can be removed with a good file or easier with an angle grinder
Ensure pistons slide back easily as a sticking piston will wear pads and disk very quickly

Cheers. Paul

Thanks fellas. I lubed the slide pins and the pistons moved cleanly. I’ve been wanting to fit a set of grooved disks and greenstuff low dust pads I bought years ago so bumpy brakes was plenty enough excuse

Today I drove my A2 for the first time in 10 days (essential journey). Achieved 48.1 mpg ✔️, battery in very good health with dis telling me 13.9v (on startup and running) which is normal ✔️, the very minor rattles and squeaks seem to have reduced which is an added bonus ✔️. I feel happy that I could probably leave it for a prolonged period and it would would start first time.

This was my first brief outing in 10 days but a real feeling of freedom! I’m so looking forward to a road trip when lockdown comes to an end.

The only thing that ruined a perfect 8 miles was some idiot in an Audi A3 tailgating. With so little traffic on the roads and services diverted to where they are really needed you’d think that people would exercise a bit more caution and leave more room! ?

Yup I have all the TT 5 speed stuff here in a box but haven't even approached doing it as its a not an easy job. Looks nice in the box though.

On bonnet corners I will modify my high tech bubble wrap install with this tip. Still though scratching my head at what could be causing a knock when I go up and down on steeper speed bumps on the drivers side. Track rod ends, drop link, wishbones all new. I even had a look at it last week when I did indeed openly scratched my head and wiggled things around to no avail.

My 6-speed knob ...

Today I replaced the replacement thermostat on my 1.4TDI.

Not too long ago I replaced the thermostat and the coolant temp sensor due to there being no movement on the temperature gauge and poor cabin temperatures. The cabin temperature did improve somewhat but the temperature guage still did not move.

The first replacement was a Meyle thermostat. Today, I fitted a Circoli thermostat.

My normal daily journey resulted the temperature guage reaching 90 degrees for the first time in months. ?
Interesting, when I put a new Circoli thermostat on the opposite happened, I’m waiting to get the right offset spanner to help me put the old thermostat back in to see what difference it makes.

Today I fitted RNS-E to Jelly, well pleased with the fit, and operation. Nice to have sat nav too.
Already fitted the Audi BT phone kit, so just need some recoding to get full handsfee working.

Hey @DJ190 good shout to use the fine tooth saw you suggested for trimming my RNS-E. Thanks David

@Silverpig here are 2 tried and proven ways to remove the tdi thermostat housing. Both use the internal 5mm hex. One is a short fine ratchet handle that comes with a short bit holder, the other ( my version ) is a Britool 1/4x5/16 ratchet ring spanner. In both cases a 5mm bit is used. In the case of the spanner one turn of tape is wrapped around the bit to secure it in the spanner. Part numbers for those interested are for the ratchet Trident T264350 and the spanner Britool RBB2531. Some pictures.
