Today I.....

@Cenick not you. Thanks for the video helps new members see the results. Geez they are bright! Questions about where you fitted them was also to aid new members who may not have known to fit as a set. Thanks for taking the time to explain and help others.

No problem! Just to say I have tried other led bulbs without success in the past, even though they claimed to be “error free” luckily I was able to return for a refund.

These were more expensive yes, but they arrived within 2 days via tracked post & more importantly work if you do order then just don’t look at them like I did while not inside the lens as they are so bright it affects your vision briefly.

Today I replaced the temperature sensor for the 2nd time in 3 years. The last replacement was a genuine VAG one from TPS. The one I put in today is a Febi Bilstein.
First impression on driving the car is that it feels worlds better even from cold (a failing sensor must really mess with the mapping applied by the ecu?) More torque and pulls well, really pleased, however after driving for several miles the indicated temp never got above 80 degrees!
Do I now suspect the thermostat or could it be either a duff or incorrect sensor?
I’ll give it a few days and see what has happened to the fuel efficiency as it seemed to have dropped off badly recently.

You can get handheld infrared thermometers for not much on eBay. I think I got one for around £15 delivered. So now you can shoot at different parts of the cooling system and see what readings you get.

I have the same issue. I just haven't had the time to do anything about it. Sometimes it sits bang on vertical showing 90°C, at others it sits around 80°C. I'm blaming it for low mpg rather than me driving it enthusiastically!

Classic failing thermostat symptoms
Slow to warm up. Never reaching 90deg or only sometimes reaching 90 deg

Also bear in mind that 90deg on the gauge will be anything from a true 81 to 100 deg as the gauge as a virtual magnet sticking it to 90 deg once it gets in the right ball park

Vcds will give you the true reading as will colour DIS

The ecu cuts in a number of different feeling maps depending on coolant temp. The difference between the fuelling map for -5deg C and 90 deg C is massive so any issues with coolant temp not getting to 90deg C quickly will adversely affect economy, and performance if running a remap (well it does on my remap)

I found my drivers window half way down, not been in it for 2 days luckily it’s not too wet, perhaps the heko’s helped

Well, it wasn’t quite today, but very recently my A2 1.4 Tdi AMF became difficult to start. A message to Vince at Stealth Racing was quickly replied to with Vince suggesting there might be a leak from the diesel fuel filter screw. It was a little damp with fuel, but didn’t seem a significant leak. One night in the garage versus the gravel drive highlighted just how much it was leaking ? I swiftly bought depronman’s machined replacement (this part not being individually available from Audi).

I was prepared for the threaded end of the screw to shear off (as often happens I’m told). However, it normally breaks through at a pre-drilled hole which should leave a nice groove for a 6mm screwdriver. Mine however had different plans, to remove the remainder I screwed in a large width metal screw into the hole, and after a couple of tries of undoing the metal screw the remainder of the plastic screw finally came out.

Depronman’s replacement requires you to transfer 2x rubber o rings, it’s perfectly manufactured and needs only to be hand tightened to avoid any damage to the filter housing itself.

I'm pretty sure this is how Audi planned to recoup some money on the A2. The constant replacement of the filter housing along with the filter due to the drain plug being made of chocolate!! Perhaps this is also the reason so many cars have filters well past their change point or even original.
Pauls' @depronman filter drain is the FIRST thing you should do to a TDI with the later filter type.

Today i went to South Wales just the other side of the Seven bridge to meet Simon ( Squeaky ) to pick up up a complete low mileage fsi rear axle. Lovely chap to deal with and i'm very pleased with my purchase. This is for a disc brake conversion on Cobalt blue as and when.

Thanks Simon, it was a pleasure to meet you! Cheers Mark.

By chance, given the above thermostat conversation, I fitted a new thermostat to the recently acquired Cobalt Tdi from @A2Steve today as the only time it came up to temp was on the hottest day of the year on the M25. Next time I looked it was back down to the mid 70's again.

Also, replaced the front shocks (possibly originals), cut off the arb drop links ready for a new pair tomorrow if in stock. Did an engine oil change plus the same for the gear box as well (genuine thermostat, oil filter, Quantum Longlife oil, genuine gear-oil and KYB Excel shocks).

During the week I'll replace the rear shocks, replace the fallen down-around-ankles rear shrouds / bump-stops and generally tidy the rear end. Will also try to do something with the lower front bumper (hanging down) and dial in that tracking (mentioned elsewhere).

MPG on last long run was 73.4, so hoping new thermostat and improved tracking might up this a smidge yet.

That's a good figure, wonder if temperature was normal, thermostat working correctly and the ECU was seeing the normal running temperature and it was the other dash reporting circuit on the temperature sender that was faulty. We shall see.

The thought had certainly occurred to me, but as I had a TPS order going in anyway I thought I'd pay the extraordinarily high price for a genuine thermostat and seal (from memory about £35 with the VAT, rather than the £9 delivered for the eBay one on the Devon car). The car is already in the air, the under-tray is off, the gauge is reading wrong and there is no mention of thermostat in the history: I reckon it's a good time to change it regardless.

As you say, we shall see ... obvs if I doesn't do the trick, I'll put a sender in as well, just as I did with Devon. Some of these things are just good to replace anyway.

Oh yes, the temp takes ages to come up, but the gauge does act perfectly normally, whereas on Devon it behaved a bit erratically. Had I thought about it, I'd have put VCDS on and had a look (no big DIS on this one).

... got the next pair of speaker adapters routed. Sanding still needed, then I will do a quick test fit, glue them together, paint and then they can go to a tester... any volunteers? Know approximately how long it takes to make them now and have a good process running, so with another couple of ring templates I should be good to go on the small series. Need a replacement router bit (this one flush trim bit is too long) but that will need shipping from the UK.
Will probably make 8-9 pairs to start with.

I think I might also be able to source more of those GZ drivers as well for a nice price, will test them and see how well they work with the adapters.
