Today I.....

.. (or actually yesterday) replaced the old corroded number plate lights for new genuine ones. Quite some job being very careful not to stress panel fasteners etc.

From the videos I have seen that's a pig of a job to do. I have avoided this as I luckily got my screws out. I now have a diary entry to replace the screws every year. A 2 min job.

I see you have one of those rarer 1.2 eco A2s - nice :) How does it drive in the Swedish winters? (My brother-in-law lives near you. He has a very old merc and I appreciated the pre-cabin heating when it's -20C) Does the A2 1.2 have pre-heating?

I did this very same job last weekend, yes, it's a bit of a pain but just a bit of advice, make yourself a wooden wedge, about a foot long with the taper being about 6 inches long.
Use this to prise the not only the inside trim but also to take off the plastic outside cover along the bottom then PULL the outside cover downwards, not towards you.

Good questions :). I only just bought it this summer so have no real clue. It does not produce a lot of excessive heat for sure, and I am unsure whether it has some kind of additional heater or not.; no webasto or eberspächer for sure, possibly an 12V cabin air heater?

early 1.2 will have an Eberspächer...

Today I checked for mice!

There were some recent posting about a group order for the engine sound proofing and some posters saying that their sound proofing had been eaten by mice and others that they had no sound proofing under the engine cover. In 15 years I've never taken the cover off and always presumed (incorrectly) that the sound proofing was integral to the cover (when it is a separate item).

Just 2 nuts and 1 bolt (10mm) and I found this:

A2 Engine Soundproofing front.jpg

No mice but did find a feather! It's a bit flabby but probably good enough, especially as a new one costs (I recall) c£70. Must say I'm disappointed the sound proofing does not go across the top of the engine. Maybe room to add a sheet of felt?

In putting it back it's a bit tricky to get the back of the cover over the sound proofing rather than pushing it back. Looks like the garage had previously crunched it up at the back. Just 15 mins start to finish.

The soundproofing needs to be a reasonable thickness to be affective. Audi did not have room on the rocker cover to add enough foam to be effective and therefore chose to add nothing at all
A layer of felt would not do any sound deadening that would be noticeable.
It is a great pity that certain areas of the engine bay are some what cramped meaning that some degree of compromise is always present this is but one example
Oh congrats on feeding the mice so they didn’t eat your foam they do seem to have a strange diet. I had a triumph stag for some 20 years and one winter left it in the garage with a ball of string in the glove box which was also locked and had no holes in it. The following gear I went to the glove box for the tyre gauge only to find a rather dead mouse in a nest made from shredded string
How the hell it got in I have no idea

Yes, all had to start with. Incl. 1.4 TDIs.

Daughter managed to buy and get new Hakka 8s onto the A2 today :) now to run them in so we can go sliding when the next set of snow comes....

Ha - Hakka 8s are hardcore Scandinavian tyres that thank goodness we don’t need here in the mild southern uk! Do post some shots of the car wearing them in snow when you can

it was a choice between Hakka 8 and 9s. The 8s were in stock and slightly cheaper... and I ran them last year on the old Octy. The new one has 9s, the wife's SX4 S-Cross has 8s.
Everything was white again this morning at home, very glad I have them on.

for those watching at home, the tyres are 185/60R15. Rims Rial Milano in 6.5Jx15, ET38. Springs are Eibach, shocks Bilstein B8. It sits about 50mm lower than original.
