Today I.....

Today I drove 190 miles to get new shoes for the A2. A1 wheels on 215/45R16

Nearly mint wheels with one new Dunlop.

£200 ?

They really suit the A2 and a bargain at that price. Wouldn't mind some myself for summer....do they make for a comfy or hard ride and are they heavy in comparison to other A2 standard wheels. ?

Can't be sure yet, I need to get the fronts balanced as there's a slight wobble. They do feel a bit more 'planted' on the road. Might take a slight economy hit at 215. My previous tyres were 185 front and 205 rear (don't ask ?)

Not today, but last Friday I joined the club of 6-speed drivers ?. Accompanied with @Menno we head out to my work, where we could execute the surgery.
Over the last few months I had gathered all the necessary parts to keep the costs as low as possible. Only thing that was missing was the gearbox itself. Inwas looking for a PTW, but they didn’t come up for reasonable money. Two weeks ago @Menno spotted a 6-speed of VW Passat with few miles on it, price was up for bids.
So I got over there and determined it was a MYP code gearbox. I decided that a better option was not to be expected any time soon, so bit the bullit and carried the box in the trunk?.
With a bit of luck I shot a near new startermotor from a breaker for very little money, only 15€. So I was ready for the upgrade.
Friday was planned. We didn’t encounter too many problems, because @Menno already had the experience of his own upgrade. We took some of the casing away in order to reach the bolts of the bellypan without having to remove the gearbox. We only lacked M7 bolts of the right length for the clutch pressureplate and that was it. Putting back the gearcables seemed to be the most challenging, but got it fixed. I am very happy with the outcome. It transformed the car in handling and drivability. ?Thanks to @Menno for his time en knowledge. We keep them rolling once more.

Today I removed something and refitted the same thing ?
…finally get round to removing the glovebox to fit the replacement with the working catches!!
Just as I’d finished unscrewing the screws I realised something looked different from the replacement one I’d just cleaned…no airbag on/off on the replacement…

What was the driver for this operation, worn gearbox?
Was this with an ATL engine?

You can cut a section onto the replacement and fit the switch to that. It’s just a switch at the end of a cable ?

Today I fitted a new (Varta Silver Dynamic) battery. The one removed is the original 2004 fitted on the production line. It's not quite dead, but is very reluctant to spin the engine, even when it's not freezing.
Ordered from Tanya mid afternoon Friday, delivered by lunch time Saturday!
Had to re-sync the remotes.
It's a pity that the terminal covers don't fit without a bit of cutting though.
5 years warranty, not sure if it'll last 17 years, and, I suspect, I'll never know!
Mac.

Which one did you go for and why did you have to cut terminal? Would that not void warranty???

Lower RPM at highway speed was the main reason. The GRJ was fine, but the DMF needed replacement. The clutch was relatively good considering the mileage. Both had done 100K miles. Yes it was fitted to an ATL engine.
