Today I discovered that Gracie’s developed an unpleasant vibration… it‘s low frequency, most noticeable through the steering wheel, and comes on when accelerating from 50 to 60 regardless of what gear I’m in. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’s something as innocent as a wheel weight that’s gone missing so going to get my wheels balanced at my local independent tyre place (where they know the A2’s jacking points) first thing tomorrow. I’m hoping this will fix it but not overly optimistic as I’m worried about it being more prevalent under acceleration than at a steady cruise, but it’s something I need to rule out I guess before getting on the phone to Gary (B&F autos). Other thoughts what these symptoms might indicate welcome… it surely can’t be the DMF as it was replaced 9 months and a few 000 miles ago at WOM.

Most likely wheel or driveshaft related. Doubt it's the dmf as that would be all the time and especially on start up. Good luck finding issues.

Yes I was reading threads which suggested it might be driveshaft related. Hope not, doesn’t sound cheap and also doesn’t sound like a 100% definite diagnosis either…

Failed or failing CV joint fits those symptoms to a tee
J&R brand from eBay at around £60 for the set of four joints including new boots clips grease nuts etc

Yep, I read something suggesting that, and I guess if it’s that it’s a good deal cheaper than the driveshaft? Maybe a case of replacing that to rule it out first?

They also do complete drive shafts but the shaft is never likely to go so just change the parts that wear out

Afternoon Malcolm,

I had the exact same symptoms last week, very worrying when it happened as I was just over 10 miles from home.

Replaced with J&Rs (complete drive shafts with joints either side) eBay offerings and the shaking/vibration above 40-50mph has gone. Near side was £56 and the off side was £70.

Your worn drive shaft (if only one is at fault) may well come out very easy but if one of them is ok and you proceed to change it then expect it to not want to come out of doing this work yourself on your driveway.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks Tom, not quite as painful as I expected - however there’s no way I’d be attempting this myself, one for Gary…

Not so fun on a 1.2 though. A new pair of drive shafts? £300 if you can get them! Ask me how i know….. 🙄

Sounds very similar to when Tonka needed the driveshafts doing I’m afraid. Hopefully it’ll just be a wheel bearing or CV joint but I wouldn’t be surprised.

I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but assuming my visit to my tyre place doesn’t fix anything, pointing the suspicion more strongly at driveshaft or CV joint, just how urgent would it be to get it fixed? The car‘s perfectly driveable at the moment but if this could be a precursor to something much more serious then I need to know how quickly to get it to Gary and how little to use it in the meantime.

I drove Tonka for 10 days (doing about 130 miles per day) prior to taking it to my mechanic and effectively ‘drove round’ the issue as much as possible. It didn’t seem to get markedly worse over the that period.

I’ve had the front wheels checked and he found the n/s was slightly out of balance so he’s fixed that (though no sign that a weight had fallen off). He also found there was a little play in the o/s wheel which i guess might point a finger of suspicion at a wheel bearing though he didn’t think it was all that excessive. Test driving her again afterwards it seemed slightly improved definitely not gone away. One thing I noticed, though perhaps it was my imagination, was that it was more pronounced accelerating through a wide radius l/h bend than straight ahead, is that plausible? Looks like I’ve got to get on the phone to Gary anyway and until he can see her we’d best be careful with her.

It could be a cv joint, or a wheel bearing or both. Or it could be worn splines on the drive shaft, especially given you’ve changed what they’re now mating into, relatively later in their life? Gary will find the problem and I’m sure is more than capable of dining the required bits.

Do you think there anything that can be determined from expert visual inspection, or would it be a case of trial and error, replacing things one by one?
