Today I.....

Today I mostly fettled about swapping a squeelin starter motor, off with the old and on with my refurbed one.
All good to go, battery reconnected, key in, turn.........nothing, not even a click.
Scratches head under me hat and nearly burst into tears.

Starter off, bench tested it, works fine.
Back on again, as before, nowt, nadda, zilch.

Scratches head again, then thought, lets check cable earths, sure enough, I'd not even put the strap onto the bolt behind the headlight.
Sorted that out and put key in, turns and joy of joys the engine spun over.

Now there is an add on here that is very puzzling.

This A2 developed a hard starting issue where if it was pointed uphill, it was a b****r to start, over the last couple of days, it's been up on quite tall ramps so I could get under it to drop the starter motor out.
When I put the key in and turned it I really just thought it would now turn over and that would be it, but no, the engine fired up on the first crack, bit clacky for a couple of seconds due to the oil being at the back of the sump but non the less, it started.
Very strange indeed.
Any thoughts?
Weird, weird things can happen. I remember a development truck we had that started most times but on occasions it would not. This went on for months with no pattern to it until one of the guys marked where the flywheel stopped which turned out to be on one of three places. Started fine from two of them but fuel drained back into the tank from the third. Interment ones are always the most trickiest, start with what has changed from when it started to happen. You can always use a fishbone diagram to see where it lies.

MoT pass on Friday but I'd be grateful if someone could clarify the emissions requirement.
The official limit for our cars is on the sticker, but the MoT tester is not allowed to lift the carpet to view it - just as well considering what the sticker says. So the limit used is a default limit. Every year until 2017 that's been 3.00 m-1 but since then it's been 1.5 m-1. I looked on the Govt website which says "For vehicles first used before 1 July 2008, the maximum level is ..... 3.0 m-1 for a turbocharged engine" yet the MoT tester insisted it was 1.5 m-1.
Which is right?
Either way no problem for me as the level on Friday was 0.97 m-1, less than last year.
Thanks.

My understanding is 3.0

Today I had another go with my A2 and I finally had time to fuel it up completelly. Average consumption was 6,27 l/100km, which is really not bad, since I am driving it mildly said ''enthusiastically'' after it gets to the operating temperature. Although this is almost 50% more than my other cars consume. Huh. Well, the smile on my face says it is worth it.

Today I completed a work trip from Devon to Cambridge via Maidenhead, and back at a self-enforced cruise speed of a true 63mph. The result was of course a new PB tank average:

CDIS did say I had another 250 miles of range left but as I know Iโ€™ll be doing shorter local trips before my next long journey on Wednesday evening and I wanted to see what the old girl can do if I take it really easy like this - not to mention fuel prices are already rising again - I thought best fill up again now.

Happy to round that up to 70mpg and call this experiment done!

Got mine back after a little work to get it through itโ€™s MoT. Couple of tyres, and a handbrake cable, oh and an Italian tune before the re-test :) . The 12 month old front disc on the driver side had become warped slightly (not sure how), so the garage fitted new discs and pads for me while they were at it. 186,000 miles, and being used daily - the quest for 200k miles landmark is on...

Good stuff! My discs seem to warp softly to a point all the ime I think its a trait of front heavy braking system and small discs. I found the caliper sliders were sticky so worth taking them out and clean and grease or replace...

Had a similar issue with my Honda CRV. Could feel the steering wheel wobble when braking and the brake pedal pulsing a little like a lighter slower ABS kicking in. It passed its MOT but with an advisor with the tester mentioning to me to look into the brakes. I found the front disc to be fine but found that 3 of the 4 slider pins to have seized one so bad it sheared off when trying to get it out of the caliper bracket, ended up having to have it machined out. The pins and seals had already been replaced 3 years earlier and assembled with plenty of anti seize grease.
Cleaned out all the caliper brackets and reassembled with a new set of pins and the feel is now perfect no more steering shimmy.
Apparently a weak spot on the CRV and you cannot find a front caliper bracket. The Stealers (Dealers) price includes the brake caliper as well so the ยฃ25 machining saved over ยฃ300.

Well not actually today but yesterday, another A2 joined our happy throng ๐Ÿ˜Š. Fortunately the neighbour is away on hols so we have space for all 4 at the moment. Always fancied a dolphin grey, but then I think I say that about every colour except black.
Therapist is coming soon.

Well done Mandy. I do love a dolphin grey. Very sparky headlights!

Congrats Mandy :) Is that the 59k 2002 one with the BOSE, double DIN and 4xEW from the Spotted section the other day? You commented on having to be quick to get the good ones ;)

It is a new ns light, os not so good but I think we have one in stock. It's only done 60k, tdi 75. A few things to do as with every 20 year old car.

Hi Mandy, tell me about it. Little Atom is a Dolphin Grey TDI and I took it off the road last August hoping to get everything done on it this summer. Loss of job put pay to that, COVID dropped my wife's work by 3/4 and now Cost of Living. Managed to keep the CRV and 20 year old A4 estate on the road plus our 14 year old home schooled twins got grade 8's & 9's in their GCSE for English, Maths & Physics. So not all bad. Fingers crossed 2023 will see it back on the road at some stage. Must say I'm quite envious of yours though. Enjoy ๐Ÿ‘

Today (yesterday) I picked up my 90 from WOM, it had a big list of work done. It had to be trailered there. With an MYP and a billet turbo courtesy of TDI Turbos a new set of brakes and bilstein shock H&R slightly lower springs (and a lot more) it is a lovely drive. I think this could be my favourite A2 now. A total transformation, a lovely car. Thank you guys.
Heated leather seats, a nice set of wheels and some paint and it will be just what I want!
