Today I.....

Having only recently rejoined this forum after a long sabbatical if you don't mind me asking, why is Barney such a bag of spanner’s compared to Mabel?
I think Mabel had been quite looked after by her previous owners. I'm assuming that Barney has been owned by a boy racer at some point, based on the cheap DRLs all over the car (they are on the front, in the boot. In every door pocket etc etc) and the S line badges.
The last person to have him must have used him to transport stuff I think - the seat belt is filthy as are the seats. There was no roller cover in the boot when I got him. So the suspension is fairly clunky.
I have spent a lot on Mabel - she has had a new head gasket, cylinder rebore and intake manifold bits and pieces, but it's all been engine really and everything else is really good condition. Barney has been used and abused, although previous owners have looked after the OSS

Ah, now I understand, that said bit of Autoglym upholstery cleaner could sort the seats, belts carpets, etc out, Barney’s past could then be washed away.

Mabel sounds like the prize possession, easy to understand why the nicer one gets the attention. Kind of sounds like how I’ve treated past girlfriends, seemingly spent more on the ones I like more.......?

Ha ha. Mabel was my first when I came back to A2s about 4 years ago. She is 1.6 like yours, but blue. But my previous A2 was a Sport and I like the kit on them. I love Dolphin Grey and wanted a 1.4 Sport. One popped up locally to me on Facebook and that was how I ended up with Barney. I've only had him just over 6 months, so will gradually do him up over the next year or so ?

... am trying to figure out how to remove the thermostat housing from my 1.6. I followed he guide in the workshop manual and removed the three bolts. It says "Remove bolts -arrows- and carefully detach thermostat housing with coolant pipe (rear) from cylinder block and remove" but I can't.

If you can get hold of a can of freezer spray (used for plumbing), could try cooling the plastic, to see if it shrinks a bit, relative to the head. Just an idea. WD-40 might help separate the housing from the head.
Mac.

It is about -1 outside so it should already be quite cold. It seams detached from the block but does not move any further. Will have another go in about 1 hour.

The cooling pipe (Death Pipe) has to be pulled out of the water pump. I’ve only done this with the inlet manifold removed but I think if you can wiggle it to release the circular rubber seal at the water pump, it should pull a few cm then if necessary you will be able to remove the C clip which locks the death pipe to the thermostat housing. If I recall correctly there’s 2 electrical connectors, 5 or 6 hoses and the injector loom also clips on somewhere.
Good luck
Matt

I was thinking of creating a temperature difference between the plastic and the metal, to break the "bond"
Hope you've got your thermals on!
Mac.

There was a zip tie connecting the thermostat housing to the wiring loom. Am not looking forward to putting this back together. I must admit I did not disconnect the driveshaft. Looks like the shoulder of the death pipe is missing along with the o-ring. Going to have to fish that out somehow.

Have a wet drivers side seat and water in the drivers door space (brain fuzzy - cant think of the word!).
It appears that when I got out of the car in Monday, I simply didnt shut the door behind me. It wasnt even on the first latch - just pushed to and I'm very lucky it was in a sheltered area and didnt get blown about in the wind ?

Sorry to hear that that rain was coming sideways yesterday mind Teresa .i was worried about my new a2 coming 550 miles from Scotland having not an oss I was concerned of water in the car but bone dry .....

Today I bought some axel stands, torque wrench, Oil syringe/pump, Audi gearbox oil (the other day).

I’m just awaiting the 17mm drain plug key from eBay which is taking forever to turn up (I'm impatient). Local stockists sell them in sets and I don’t want a set, I just want the one. ☹️

I can then get the gearbox oil changed and take a good look/pictures of the underside.

The axle stands came from Aldi (yes... that well known motor store! ?) but they are surprisingly good value and quality and at £7.99 for two and rated at 2 tonnes per stand, I spent £15.98 and have 4!
