Today I.....

@gills .... you know I get confused every time I try to drive a car in the UK... but with reference to the pic of the front of your VBL (very beautiful lady) did you meet a JCB speed tractor with snow plow a mile down the road, on the wrong side of the road.... or are tires mounted the wrong way ????

I think the confusion is that tractor tracks point backwards, as they point downwards on the front of the tyre:

I'm pleased to say I didn't have to play chicken with a tractor and only passed one other car on this section of road (excluding the RC car someone was playing with in the middle of the snowy road!)

Fitted my genuine audi bluetooth unit to pair up with my mk1 rnse. It's a perfect fit under passenger side floorwell.
Thank you Timmus for your helpful tips and instructions.
Steve

Very nice, I know you’ll enjoy this set up Steve. I certainly did coming from the Xcarlink as my hands free option.

I must ask though, what is the additional red and black leads for in the bottom left of the first picture. I’m sure it’s a simple answer but don’t think I’ve noticed such a set up before.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi Tom.
It's a mains 12v connection from battery. In my ownership it's always been like that. As a precaution when i removed/reinstalled my ecu i disconnected the battery!

Thanks Steve,

Everyday really is a school day. During ownership of 4 A2s I've have never noticed these mains leads.

The A2s I’ve played with have looked like this (sorry not my actual car and too lazy to go outside):

Your leads do look very OEM and guess it’s something Audi stopped doing at some point. As I said, every day is a school day for me.

Kind regards,

Tom

The lead setup in the first picture was introduced around 2002 to 2003
Earlier cars had a different setup
I got caught out with it a few years ago when a pulled an ecu out of the carrier it was quite stuck and came away suddenly and I touched the outer case of the ecu to the terminal. I now know this terminal is 12v. Would have been safer with a cover over it. I now buy a rag over it when changing ecu’s

Today I ..... probably found traces from one of these " Mr Strongman" guys ;)

Bought another AMF engine with low mileage from a foreign Polo and when I drained it.... I found this one. ...
What do you think  ?

...what kind of torque did this strongman achieve ???? the washer is squeezed to zero thickness on one area.... have any of you managed to "compete" with similar make up of a 2mm thick washer.....??

Arrived at infinity exhausts for a full Stainless system and the guys say that all is needed is the flexi and a possible small section after the cat as everything else is fine.

Ok and a flat battery again after replacing it on Weds, jump start required this morning, something must be draining it!

I’ve seen comments here relating to the cccu being at fault, this could be the problem as both keys have also lost sync.

Anyone know of this might be the case and if so easy to swap, do they need coding or anything else in particular?

Morning Steve,

Like most things, this is an easy task to swap if you know what you're doing. Can I suggest trying to get someone to scan your car and probably get some assistance from Tom @timmus, he can supply a replacement CCCU over the mail system. He will probably want to see the scan results and know which CCCU you currently have fitted.

Hope you get this sorted soonest as its these things that can ruin the pleasure of using our aluminium friends, only until there fault has been rectified of course.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks Tom I’ll get it scanned later and message the other Tom

Ordered a replacement set of boot struts via Rick / Audi Tradition, also a new alarm button while they’re still available at semi-reasonable cost!

I had considered getting my struts rehashed but then someone, I forget who ( @PlasticMac? ) suggested that as the seals won’t be touched it could be a false economy.

I concluded that as the originals are now only going weak at 16 years old, perhaps it’s one of those parts on this car that you should just cough up for OE quality parts and change once in the car’s lifetime with you as the owner - just like the dual mass flywheel for example. I concluded the same on the alarm button, mine is fine but a lot of people seem to have broken theirs, they 20 odd quid at AT....

Back to the struts: still available for 75 quid new from AT (and they’re over £100 a pie from Audi dealers), so I swallowed it and ordered.
