Today I.....

Picked up my project car Cosmo from the latest repair. The gearchange was always a bit sloppy but baulky at the same time. Last Friday the original 5-speed box lost gears 3-5 - but it was on 287000 miles and third was always a bit clunky. As luck would have it, I had a spare GPK box (~140000 miles) from my 04 Tdi that was replaced with a PTW last July, and the mechanic who did that swap lives 100 yards away. Brief delay to order a bottle of 75W90 gear oil, and the car went over on Thursday. Swap finished last night complete with a gearbox oil change and replacing the white plastic slider bush (the block attached to part 47 in https://audi.7zap.com/en/rdw/audi+a2/a2/2003-248/7/711-711030/) that contacts the selector counterweight (which always looked really ropey) - and I've just gone for a test drive. The same box in my other car used to be quite heavy and mechanical (compared to our AUA car). The oil change and slider bush has worked wonders - the gear change is smooth and light and precise - not quite an AUA but very close to this. Much better than it ever was in the other car - and I am now thoroughly convinced of the benefits of new oil to a Tdi gearbox having experienced the comparison. The slider change has also got rid of the sloppiness in the left-right gearchange planes. Didn't even have to adjust the cables. My one fear was that the car may have the early A2 speedometer feed from the gearbox instead of the ABS sensors, but this proved not to be the case, so job done. Very happy.

Morning all,

This is a belated entry as I conducted this task on Thursday.

Ive had the Dremel out again.

Some of you will remember that Ive changed RNS-E units and had my faithful 193G up for grabs, well it should be in Johns @johnyfartbox car later today.

This glorious head unit stated life in a 2013 A3, since purchase (middle of last year) it has been reshaped and fitted into Project OEM, it is also the very same item that I used to test the latest firmware available from www.rnse.pcbbc.co.uk.

Very recently it has had the fascia removed and swapped for the 2012 Seat Media System E's fascia. This was done as I want to keep there chrome buttons on my new head unit.

After fascia swap it looked like this:

Noting that the screen wasn't looking its best I used some maguires product to make it look much better on the eye:

I quickly prepared it for the weight loss program:

Thursday finally see me attach it with the Dremel. This is what removed:

After a quick wipe down it looked like this:

Not fully pushed in as it was only being coded for John’s A2 then boxed up for dispatch. It does fit perfectly though:

I’ve got this reshaping task down to about 30-40 minutes now from being masked to pushed into the A2s aperture.

A very satisfying result, hopefully John enjoys his new toy.

Kind regards,

Tom

Today I took my car out of the garage to discover this 8 inch crack! I’m 99.99% sure it certainly wasn’t there when I drove it in two days ago.... very weird indeed. Hopefully the next one will last 15 years too.

Aaarghhh!! and very annoying.

I’m assuming you mean you own garage rather than somewhere you’ve had something done to it?

Yes, it stays safe inside my own internal garage every night. No freezing and defrosting windows to contend with. Nobody else has been driving it nor been in my garage. Just one of these bizarre things.

... popped out for five minutes and fitted my tt pedals and bespoke footrest. As the dude would say - “ties the room together”. What with all the replaced switch gear it’s almost factory fresh in Patty ?? thanks @anthony lawler

Looks brilliant Tim,

I know the TT Style look isn’t for everyone but your footwell has been beautifully transformed in my eyes. I still cannot believe that a £4 bit of metal can make such a difference (with a set of £40 pedal covers of course).

Kind regards,

Tom

All thanks to your hard work and dedication in getting it all sorted fella. I thought it would look good once in but as you say it’s actually quite transformative.

It looks like the last thing you now need is the headlight switch to make a full set. It might be something I need to consider as it all looks good.

And to think that there are still people out there who insist winter tyres (never mind summer-biased all-seasons!) are a scam!

Have a photo of a snowy Audrey with my two boys, who coming from a charmed life in Singapore have never seen this strange white stuff before! No winter tyres on their bikes mind!

Glad to hear that they are meeting your expectations! Again thanks to @YorkshireHill storing them correctly out of the light I expect they’ll be good for at least another 2 winters or perhaps 3
I managed to purchase a really nice set of pepperpots this week with a set of Dunlop summer tyres https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154287920248 so I’ll be year round pepperpots on my Dolphin Grey from now on. ?
