Today I.....

Today I changed my brake pads and discs and repaired one of the slide pin thread holes with a kit.

The old hole appears to have been helicoiled - about 2mm of a rusty old helicoil fell out when I went to drill it certainly.

Unfortunately the Bergen repair kit pieces M9x1.25mm seemed to have a slightly different pitch to their thread and the pin really, really didn’t want to go in(new or old). It’s certainly IN and secure now - next change of discs may involve an angle grinder though…

Today I replaced rear springs and shocks and brake drums.

The slowest part was the one screw on either side in the arch liner that would not come out.

the hardest bit was torquing to 30 plus 90degrees! Oof. You really need about a foot long extension on a flexible breaker bar to get the angle and it was still a real strain! Easier on the passenger side without the fuel filler pipe in the way but still - ouch!

Now hopefully I’ll stop scrubbing the arches when going over bumps with two adults in the car!

Today I finally got fed up of my fogged-up front fog lamps. As had been suggested on some other older posts, the problem was on the inside of the lenses. I managed to remove and disconnect the units, remove the bulbs and make a reasonable fist of cleaning the lenses by putting a brush through the hole where the bulb goes. I’d be able to do a better job if I could somehow dismantle the units so I could get better access to the lenses. Is this possible? I found a post suggesting it was and it involved loosening the screw adjustment however I couldn’t find any way of removing that. Any hints? I think they’re good enough the way I’ve done it but someone might benefit from the knowledge.

IPA on a long cotton bud or dowel with soft cloth taped on the end works a treat for me.

Today I test drove 8 miles after front brake disks and rear drums and suspension replacement. No fires, no funny noises and the rear alloys were only mildly warm.

It’s always a bit nerve wracking!

Amazing how hot the front wheels get after a bit of city start stop driving. Even taking it really easy.

They need the air flow to cool them down ?

Today I'm posting the Father's Day card my daughter made. The A2 has made a real impression with the family and it's not even up to scratch yet.
I also ordered the steel to lift up the back of the car so that I can remove the whole of the rear axle beam at some stage. If it works I will post some details.

She made an excellent job of that. Instantly recognisable!
