Today I.....

Looking fabulous Paul, a credit to you. You've quite the knack for this...

View attachment 82920Well an evening mopping the car and good polish today with the new wheels and tyres ...the pup I recently bought is starting to look a lot better .. It comes with the benefit of cruise control ..heated red leather still looks worn after a good clean and feed .. but it’s the best I can do without dying them and to be honest I quite like the worn look .. Two mint front headlights has made a huge difference..Ice cold aircon ?..Brakes front and back have been refreshed new discs pads & rear cylinders and shoes . .oil change and filters inc cabin ..new drop links oh and Sunroof working ?.. I will drive it now it’s a new winter hack.. But looks half tidy.. Just offside rear wheel arch to paint and rear spoiler to paint next week and that’s it..at 160k plus so not to shabby ....at least it will save my low mile one the worst of the winter weather ...

Today I made my first pilgrimage to WOM!! many thanks for the advice and your time fellas. It was bitter sweet - It was great to have some positive input about the car generally BUT not so good to have my fears about the condition of the gearbox confirmed (if anyone has a gearbox for a 1.4 petrol 2002 lying around - please think of me.....). I filled up before i left Asda at Newport and i filled up again at the exact same pump on my return - the car averaged 56.42 mpg!!! That was even with significant use of the climate control... Done about 2000 miles in it since we bought it and despite the dodgy gearbox it has averaged 47mpg - which i reckon is pretty good for a 20 year old car.

It was also good to meet @drewroberts with his TDi 90 - great little car - lots of oomph. I'm almost persuaded that I need one of those when I've got this one properly sorted for my lad to learn in.... i can see why people on here seem to be persuaded that one A2 in your life is not enough

Bless you Darren ..well it’s the last one I will be doing ..sally has hers now .and i have my best one and this will be the go to one for putting big miles on and winter hack ...I would certainly lose a couple of thousand if I tried to sell her on but it’s nice to have done this car proud by bringing her back to a decent standard ..with all the new parts I have to renew the whole of the underneath running gear at a future date ..she should be good for doubling the current milage ? ..it’s also one that I don’t have to be so fastidious over ..Paul

Considering what you started with Paul that’s bloody marvellous. Well done for persevering with it.

Superb work on the cars . I’m afraid all I did today is buy my third A2 . A red one to go with the Mauritius Blue TDI 90 . Only a small purchase . Hopefully collecting my powder coated tow bar tomorrow.

What is the milage on this imola And is that second engine or second gearbox
Sorry, not on every day, which is why I keep on missing the good parts! To directly answer, 2 engines & 4 gear boxes; the third was factory fresh, but there's something wrong with the diff, so it's at the back of the garage awaiting a recondition somewhere, when I get around to it.
Swapping the engine did for a lot of other parts - the turbo got water in it & was never right thereafter, and the original gearbox gave up the ghost shortly after as well. There was apparently still plenty of meat left on the original clutch at the point the engine was taken out.
Since the start of lockdowns last year, I've done hardly any driving, so still stuck at 582k - I update my sig every 1000 miles :)

Today I had an adventure. I boarded the 08:50 train to Stoke-on-Trent to collect my A2 from Rob and Marcus at WOM.

As always, impeccable service and my car was ready with all the work undertaken as planned. I can’t recommend them highly enough and well worth a 4 hour round trip for me.

En route back I stopped off for a photo-shoot.

About 40-50 miles into the journey I stopped for another photo-shoot.

This one was as unplanned as the first, only I had broken down in the middle lane of slow moving traffic on the M1. The battery symbol came up and the car started but died instantly. As a sitting duck in the middle lane, congested traffic or not, it was most uncomfortable. No-one wanted to help with the exception of one kind driver who helped me push it to the hard shoulder. What the image just about shows is that within a 100 metres or so, possibly less, there wouldn’t have been a hard shoulder in which to move the car to. These smart motorways are anything but, dangerous in my eyes.

Anyhow, Rob and Marcus did their best to offer support and diagnosis over the phone. Eventually the AA came and I was towed to a nearby service station. Diagnosis points to a failed alternator.

The AA technician (also a Rob) was a gent. He put a heavy duty battery into the A2 and then followed me back to WOM with the intention of swapping batteries again if needed. No air-con or radio on and I made it in one hit.

Rob (WOM) has been a diamond, returning to open up again and also ferrying me back to Stoke-on-Trent station. I’m typing on the train minus A2 and back in some respects to the position I set off in this morning.

For the love of a good woman or A2…

What an adventure Darren! Had an Alternator failure on the Severn Bridge, lights flashing. Pulled into the services and awaited AA. 4 hours later a recovery wagon picked me up and took car to an indy Audi specialist.
Then I got a parking ticket for overstaying, despite their image snapping my car leaving on a recovery truck!
Eventually got ticket voided, no thanks to AA!
I hope WOM give your car a rinse over before you collect it. Looks a bit grubby in your pics!

The laugh is at your last comment, not the issue you had for the avoidance of doubt. ?
