Today I.....

Average speed was about 55mph, thanks to the trafic as I left Manchester and a number of longer streches with roadworks speed limits.

The car has OSS, a full spare in the boot and is on 15 inch steel rims which doesn't help in terms of weight.

I can get close to 4.0l/100km when driving in Belgium thanks to the 70km/h speed limit on most roads.

Today I carried out an oil and filter change and replaced the air filter to go along with the fuel filter and pollen filter i had also replaced.

All Bosch filters used (which are my preferred choice) other than the fuel filter which was a genuine Audi one.

The best Quantum Longlife 3 5w30 oil used, which i always use even though I change it annually.

That's the 'full' service in my book that I carry out every two years, oil and filter every year regardless of mileage (which is usually very low).

Service light reset, old fault codes deleted and service book stamped up to date.

After also fixing the fuel injector wiring harness problem yesterday, I have one happy A2 again that hopefully won't require me getting oily hands again for some time ?

Just needs a good thorough clean now, although the engine and undertray did have a good degreasing today whilst the cover was off.

Isn't that engine cover horrible to remove and replace on your own by the way! ?

Done the undertray so often now it does not bother me. I slide the front over / under the bumper lip and then fit those 3 screws, next I fit the ones at the rear followed by the wheel arches and lastly the 2 little screws at the front. I usually do this job in the rain with the water running down my neck.

Don't like the sound of that water down the neck, hopefully it's done in the summer rather than winter ?

I do the same thing but still find it awkward getting both left and right front outer curved edges tucked in at the same time as overlapping the front 3 fixing points for the bumper. One normally gets stuck and then when you wriggle it to get it right one of the curved bits pops out again.

I've also fitted all the fixings before then been unable to get the two higher side fixings fastened as I hadn't got the plastic side holes positioned over the long threads so had to drop it down again to be able to fit those nuts.

It can just be a pain sometimes, other times ok.

When I'm just doing the oil change and not the air filter, I tend to leave it in place and just put something between the drain plug and the tray to avoid the oil getting on the tray when I drain it off and leave it be.

It's a shame the tray wasn't cut out a little more around the sump plug so you could drain the oil more easily

The tray coming off is also good because you can inspect areas normally hidden and hopefully spot problems early. Remember those areas are still hidden on the MOT.
Strangely enough I wish the tray was LONGER and overlapped the floor a bit more.

Possibly a removable panel to allow access full access to the drain plug as some other cars have would have been good?

I know that an Audi main dealer certainly wouldn't be removing the tray to carry out just an oil change ?

Yesterday:

1) (pertinent to the above) I tried to do an oil change on my brother-in-law's 2009 Fiesta 1.6 diesel but didn't have a 21mm socket or spanner to hand to undo the sump plug - although luckily I did have a 27mm oil filter socket! - So I used my at-the-time-of-purchase unavailable in the UK Mityvac fluid pump and extractor that I had imported from the US some time ago to extractor the warm oil via the dipstick instead. I assume this is how many Audi dealers would have changed the oil on our cars as I understand the PD TDI lends itself to this method well?

Anyway, I must say, I'm a convert: It extracted near-enough the full amount of oil I was expecting it to and it was quick and of course very clean - to the point where an oil & filter change is now a pleasurable 15/20 minute job - plus on the A2 TDI you could use it to suck out the oil in the filter / cooler housing. I can't wait to try it on Audrey when the next change comes up - I would probably alternate between changing via this method and doing it the proper way via the sump every 6-8000 miles just to be sure. Thoughts welcome on all of this.

2) I then spent an enjoyable hour going through the mountain of paperwork / service history that came with Akoya: It was even more of a delight to discover that once I'd pieced it all together via a spreadsheet (which I do for all of my cars to track work done and costs), I have the full service history from new for the car; which at 191k miles, you can imagine how comprehensive that is! The picture doesn't really do justice to how thick that pile of paper work is. I also went through all of @PaulA2 's posts that I could tell referred to Akoya (as he had more than one A2 most of the time) and was able to further add to the list of works done to complete the picture.

If I do come to sell this car then obviously this effort would have been well worth it.

I trimmed a little section out of the undertray to make oil changes easier/cleaner when I'm in a rush.

Little suckers springs to mind regarding main dealers which seems quite appropriate here, although I've called them much worse things in the past, or at least have felt like it ?

Today I….

Fitted these factory brackets:

Then fitted a recent Swing coloured purchase:

Wasn’t happy with the integration of colours so got my trusty friend out to play:

Then employed some Volico (thanks again Erling @Erlingtheyounger):

And ended up with this:

Rather happy with the results. I know the colour match isn’t as perfect as the the Twist and Platinum paint but it does blend better. Well worth the effort.

A full write up on how to dismantle the Rear Cup Holder is being produced and should have it to you all by this evening.

Kind regards,

Tom

Today, I installed custom grey dials with added "A2" branding, fairly easy job, although dial calibration is a bit awkward in the car.
Link please Iain,

I love the look you’ve got there. Just watched the link Spike shared and seems quite straight forward to calibrate the needles.

Looks terrific Sir.

Kind regards,

Tom

Here you go Tom, they were made by ktec, which I believe you have discussed in the white dials group buy thread.
The video gives you the basic idea, the A2s calibration isn't quite the same, but it's close enough that you can figure it out with the video.

Ian are these just like for like scales or with plasma illumination?

Thanks for confirming the supplier Iain,

Yes I remember chatting to the K-Tec sales team last year some time.

In light of the video and finally realising how much easier the calibration might be then guess the Group Buy could possible come around again. Ill wait to see if anyone else is doing anything with custom dials first though.

In the mean time I might have a play with a cluster to see if I can master the needle removal and fitting followed by the calibration process. Cannot believe I stopped this venture due to the calibration being far too difficult, when it appears that it isn’t. Strong words I know but I’ll have a play to see how difficult it is. I’m sure I can find a non DIS cluster to play with and learn in 250.

I really like the colour you’ve gone for. Looks very nice and I’m sure many others think the same.

Kind regards,

Tom

Made the decision that with impending knee operation and finding out I don’t really need a car in London, it’s time to sell Bluey. I’ll be selling off my limited parts supplies first, while getting Bluey cleaned up and ready for sale in a couple of weeks time.
Parts will appear from late today, early tomorrow.
We’re moving to Wales in August next year, at which point I’ll be after a double din, Bose, OSS and factory DIS equipped Tdi

@s2ulk you might want to send @Bargepower a PM quick!
