TomTom 910

I recently upgraded my PDA based sat-nav to a standalone TomTom910. Wow. Apart from the new lovely features like traffic cameras and the traffic feature that tells you of delays I have to add one thing that has become a FIRM favourite... And it is the one thing I thought I won't have a use for.

The TomTom remote.

The suction cup is too short to work on the little window on the right of the driver and I hate it there anyway even if it could fit. I like to have mine dead centre and low on the windscreen. Basically hidden from view (bebind the wiper) but still in your line of sight. Problem with an A2 (or any MPV like modern car) is the distance to the base of the windscreen from your hand's reach to operate the thing once on the move...

In comes the the TomTom remote.

I have a Symphony II radio and thus have the central coin holder under the handbrake. The remote lives here and looks perfect as it is black and its silver matches the A2's aluminium perfectly. You can now control your TomTom fully without even looking down. It has a very ergonomic design with dimples and a central enter button to make operating the TomTom so easy.

Since this TomTom can "read" you the weather forecast and traffic reports etc it makes it so easy to select these functions on the go and have them read to you!!!

If any of you have a 310, 510 or 710 and don't have a remote I can HIGHLY recommend getting one and also the central coin tray should you not have one.

i have a TomTom 510 and it sits very nice on the little window on the right
the only thing is it is easy for the smash and grab
but it is noy in your field of veiw
cheers

To be honest I never even tried fitting it on the right as it not a natural place for me to look at it. I feel you have to focus and de-focus your eyes much more to look there. Way out at the front it is not in your way as is sticks out past the top of the wiperblade by only about 20mm. And that is not where you look at the road anyway. You look much higher up at the road...

I use my Zumo in the little window by the A pillar, now that TTS is on this and the 910 there is little need to look at it, the voice prompts do a great job.

I have the 910 and am thinking about making something which allows it to be mounted in someway to the can holder, or either then "rail" that runs along the top of the passenger side dashboard. The position there would be ideal :D

One thing I have notice compared to other vehicles, is how well the unit works even when not under glass :D I'm not sure if it is due to aluminium not being as good a barrier of steel to radio waves, but i can say for sure that my tomtom works fine in the cubby hole in front of the gear stick.
The only thing with it being there is that you cant see the damn screen

Deep inside my house the TomTom picks up signals!!! Only one satellite but still: INSIDE the house away from a window. So yes I can vouch for that amazing reception too...
