I have noticed recently that a lot of dealers are trying to sell top up insurance, these polices are supposed to pay for any shortfall in what the insurance pay, and the cars replacement value.I think we all should refuse this type of policy as it is the thin end of the wedge(insurance companies would love us to have two lots of cover on every car)with the ongoing battle I have with (More Than) it seems that they undervalue cars, even though the policy clearly states they will pay the market value. Thank god for the internet, with this tool we can source prices nationwide, and so prove them wrong

I think what you are referring to is Gap insurance. This will - like you say bridge the gap between what the insurer offers and what the price of the car was originally, enabling you to buy the exact same car again.

We had a leaflet when we picked up our A2 all about Gap insurance. We didn't take it out but if I remember correctly, it cost approx £250 for 2 or 3 years cover. Not bad if you write the car off after 2 years - then get the full value of the car back.

I'm just about to buy my A2, I've decided to take out the gap insurance. I agree I think it's disgusting that the insurance companies don't give you the value if you do write it off. However, a friend recently wrote her car off and her insurance company is only willing to pay 75% of what it's worth.

I think it's a gamble like any insurance but in a sense I'd rather pay £250 as Rob Earl says instead of losing £3000 - £5000 if my car is written off.

Just my opinion :)

A decent insurance company would normally give you a new car if its less than a year old. Year 2 onwards its market value, and we all know what that means. Probably worth doing for cars that really depreciate.

Its really the same as paing extra for getting a house contents policy which has a new for old clause.
