I have been trying to enable my traction control button and the little orange light seems to disappear after about 5 mins of driving -is this normal or do i have a problem?

If the light is flashing the TC is in operation, if the light is on all the time (any speed) it is not working get it checked out, if its off then its working as it should do. if you have pushed the button to get the light on then the TC is off BUT when your speed is over 42mph the TC will switch back on and the light goes out.

So.. Just normal.

Thanks for that - phew! I've never seen the orange light flash before - so I guess I need to be more reckless!!

while we're on this topic, I wonder if it is the traction control which kicks in to cut gas when I hit top rev, or is it supposed to be separate? Because I realise when it cuts the gas at top rev, it cuts for a very long time (>1 sec), it felt like when traction control is taking over...

Is it supposed to stop the gas for that long? or was it because my front tyres were slipping away as well? (but didn't fell like it lost any traction though)

Humps, that'll be the rev limiter which is something different to traction.

My experience with the rev limiter is that it is very subtle. Try it by revving it hard in 2nd, for example. It will just go slightly into the red zone and stay there without stuttering. I've seen that differently in other cars (heavy stuttering!).

ESP cuts in when you corner at high speeds or when you put on the gas while leaving the corner. Especially with the Tdi, or when on wet roads, you see the icon pop up quite soon. It will cut gas first, and will stick to that until traction is restored. Doesn't take too long, in most cases. I think I read on this forum that in extreme traction loss the next step would be to brake. But I don't see that doing any good and I'm not about to try that. Well, maybe on an airplane strip ;)

Oh, BTW, have you ever tried to do a sprint with TC off on a wet road? That's when you really start to appreciate it, because it is very hard to control the Tdi under those circumstances!

Drive safely!
