Traffic accident!

 My first traffic accident. Both Air bags blown, front bumper, radiators hood, front window ++ ,and the insurance wont cover it!:(

I survived, and no injuries to speak of.

Hope I can fix the A2 my self ( or else the car goes to the scrap-heap), but many parts involved. Thinking of buying them second hand. What worries me the most are the air bags, and the fact that I will need a new dashboard.

My poor A2...
Will need this forum as ever before...

cheers,

glad you're fine after the incident. If the frontal impact was so big that airbags are deployed, you could be looking at bent chassis which isn't fixable (at least economically), let a lone DIY. I would have it checked by expert before buying any parts.

If the impact was a purely head-on one, then the chances are that the the chassis will be straight - there are specially designed beams that are designed to distort and stop damage from passing to the main space frame.

Sounds like a nasty job though and you're looking at around £1500 minimum for dash, bags and bumper. If the radiator and/or condenser are damaged, then even more.

Main thing is that you're OK and will live to fight another day.

CHeers,

Mike

That'll be the metal bar behind the bumper, my last accident had that beam bent quite badly (by the tow bar of the car in front), also pushing back the two radiators. But no airbag was deployed, which could be that it missed the impact sensor or the fact that impact was at rather slow speed. But if the airbag was deployed, then chances are two new radiators, pipe work and regas will be required.

Anyhow, I would still have the chassis checked.

Good luck!

hmm... The beam was bent,( yes, by the tow bar of the car in front) and the hood radiators will need replacement. Will get the full list tomorrow. In the meantime, take a look at the picture (from the newspaper), it doesn't look that bad... (trying to be positive:/ )

Have already located a donor car, with dash and airbags. Hope it is doable.

Ran into a car from behind (did´nt have a chance.. slippery snowy conditions. total of three cars involved) , without full insurance. It covers the damages on the other car, bur chances are not good for my little A2:(

Cheers

To me doesn't look to bad at all the gap (door to wing) looks straight so just panel work on the outside, Glad your ok and good luck with the repair job

Cheers Phil

Sorry to hear about your accident, but as long as your ok. Don't be too disheartened though, I'm sure you can rebuild the A2 to fight another day.

I would offer to help but your Soooo far away. ship it across mate :)

I'm sure it won't be as bad when you strip it down, are used parts available for it?

The A2 Resurrection !

Just wanted to inform you that my A2 now is back on the road:D Not as shiny as before, but in fully working order. What is most important: The A2 live to fight another day!:)

Total cost so far is about 1000 GBP.(Both radiators and fan, bumper bar, hood, dashboard and airbags, control unit etc.) Reckon in the end about 1300 - 1400 GBP. BUT, look at the bright side, I now at least have a bachelor's degree in A2 mechanics!

Cheers,

Well done! Did you take many photos during the rebuild to show us your experiences?

No, sorry, I didn't. But taking apart the front details (bumper, radiators an so-forth) is fairly easy. Took it apart in 3 hours, and back on in 2. The main task is the dashboard with airbags. Took me a total of 6 hours straight to take the old one out, and put the new one in (with steering wheel and everything). I used a lot more time taking the dash out than putting the new one in. You learn as you go!:)

The problem is finding the right parts. Had to get parts from three different Scrap-heaps in Norway. A lot of telephone calls and e-mails.
