transmission noise cont...

OK, went out with technician this evening, he was diagnosing a low noise from the transmission, I can hear a high noise. Just a general question here chaps:

He has looked up on the data bank and has found a problem with the cooling fan, but this is not the noise that I hear.

My 1.4 sports has done 15k (18mnths young) should I expect a gearbox whine (not children!) in second gear around 20mph/2krpm? It is audible in 3rd but less than 2nd.

Can any other A2 owner confirm that their gearbox whines around this point! My test is to drive up to 20-25mph and then take my foot off the accelerator. It is a "whiring" sound combined with a whine.

Would appreciate anyone with similar mileage or similar noise.(or somene to say that this is perfectly normal)

Thanks for that ULP:) I guess I am after some independent input/re-assurance. You are absolutely right about the noise it roars at me every time I drive:(

I get a bit paranoid about car noises listening for the slightest squeek or rattle. it seems worse when I have been on this forum reading all the problems members are having. If someone wanted to buy an A2 and read some of these posts they would be put off for life.
Think its about time we had some possitive posts about this car and not all negative.

whining

If it's any help doctor, you could check out my posts regarding my gearbox. Although I think by the sound of it (sorry!), your symptoms are slightly different.

Thanks for that Toby1:)

crb1011, I do understand how it must feel for contributors just to see problem posts on the board, My A2 is the best car that I have and intend keeping it for some time now it has been discontinued.
But I have been sold the Audi ethos of perfection, quality in engineering, good service and expect this (after parting with a sizable amount of money), if I wanted a car and company that would be second rate I could have bought a ford etc i guess.

Hope this explains:eek:

Doctor, glad to hear your car is the best you have had. Please dont get me wrong I also find the A2 great to drive and would love to change it for a newer model. Until you own an A2 you cant appreciate how well they drive and handle but if a potential owner read some of these posts they may well be put off in getting one. Happy motoring hears to the next A2

Well if it wasn't for the creaking dash I would be perfectly happy with my A2. It's annoying but must be fixable so when time comes I will make an attempt to cure it.

I am getting a whine at around 50mph but not before then goes when getting past that speed. strange may have to turn the radio up seems better when i have a passenger more noticeable when i drive alone. I must addmit i am listening for it may have to get it checked out

I remember doing that when I had a company car:D but when its your own:eek:
I shall be taking the car down to my local garage (for local people!) to get them to give it a check independently.
As a previous poster mentioned once you pick up the sound it never goes away, also a problem to describe when it comes to sound.

had the whine noise checked out today by vw garage and yes they did hear it but suggested that I wait for it to get louder before they investigate furher. could need a new gear box but this does seem a bit OTT gears select ok no crunching if I have the window open or radio turned up a little then I dont hear it. Am I being paranoid. Got a warranty from car care plan so at least it is covered upto £1000 not sure how much a new gear box is or can they take the old one apart and replace things not mechanically minded so have not got a clue

My previous A2 (1,4 petrol) had a whine in 5th gear at 100-105 km/h (about 63 mph) when cruising or accelerating, not engine braking. Took it to the dealer and they recommended me to get a stereo and turn up the volume. Now, I don't really want to take my new A2 there for anything, (Audi dealer).

They told me as well it should get louder before they investigate furher. Car was nearly new when I took it there but since I don't have it anymore I don't know if its got any louder.

My TDI 90 started to whine in 4th and 5th on the over-run (when lifting off the accelerator). I wasn't too concerned although it seemed to be slightly louder than I remembered (the car is 2 years old and has only done 17500 miles). I asked the dealer to check it at the first service recently and to my surprise they want to strip the gearbox and investigate. I'll be taking it in next month. Fortunately the car is still under warranty!

Update.

After taking the A2 out with Local Audi chief technician he confirmed that the noise was present.

Collected the car, the service manager said it would not be resolved by stripping gearbox and that we should just leave it for now and observe. (this is spoiling my driving methinks!)

I returned and contemplated, and replied by email that I was not happy with this and that they either strip gearbox and resolve or fit new gearbox, I also requested that they reply in writing before I consider what to do next.
They have now accepted that they have to do something, I have to await a response from Audi UK but they will either investigate or replace although there does not appear to be any A2 gear boxes in this country so a wait, but a result.

So from being told "don't worry sir other A2 vehicles of similar milage have this noise" to doing something has taken 4 months! It does seem hard work when all I want is the Audi ethos of quality that I have invested in, to be applied to my humble but perfectly formed A2.
Doctor.

OK here's the update folks!

The Audi dealership have accepted that the noise needs to be resolved, about three weeks ago they said that they would either strip or replace the gearbox. They would seek advice from Audi UK tech dept and in a few days let me know, three weeks later, no news.
I have requested the persons name at audi so i can progress this further, It all seems like a paperwork exercise with warrenty insurance to me but I am getting bad vibes that they will want to go for the inconvenience route. Still they are offering me a car for the proposed 6 weeks off the road, so must not complain too much.

Will post once I hear more.

Problem solved. Derby Audi didn't need to strip the gearbox, they replaced the front N/S wheel bearing. The car was booked in for a week in case they needed to order parts but I got it back the same day. It was good to hand back the A3 courtesy car - rubbish compared to the A2!

Good for you Yossarian,

I believe this is not Audi Tech that are making the decision regarding my gearbox but the warrenty company, If my Audi dealership can spin it for weeks (weeks=£££'s) I guess they will.
I have the same dread of loosing my A2 for a nearly ran out of the Audi stable:(
