has anybody had problems with a noise like a worn release bearing,my tdi makes this noise all the time, and is worse in neutral. If I depress the clutch the noise stops.(This is the opposite to a worn r/ bearing) I also have a noise on cold starting like marbles in a plastic box from the centre air vents. I have only done 850 miles, I hope this is not a warning of things to come.

The gearbox does have HUGE bearings to cope with the torque and the alu body magnifys noise. The box is 'naturally' quite loud in neutral with cold oil.

The noise from the gearbox is when the car is warm, so the oil is hot, Its a shame the disc player has no hole for a jack plug,I could then wear headphones, this would solve all my noise problems. (Maybe I should ask audi uk to fit one), Anyway I will take the car into vindis Bedford next week to see what they think.

In these very hours i'm having my transmission changed (warranty claim, thank god!) after 40.000 km. It started a couple of weeks ago, and sounded like a worn wheel bearing. It got worse, and I called the Audi service to pick it up. The dealer changed both front wheel bearings with no result and ordered a new transmission.

I don't know if my transmission is the same as in the other models, but i would think so, since the "automatic transmission" is just an automated manual transmission.

@freddie:

The transmission on the 1.2 is not the same as on the other models.... but there seem to be some problems with it, but mostly they are covered under warranty.

Bye, Frido (who had to have the transmission´s hydraulics pump replaced under warranty on his 1.2)

Just back from Vindis Audi Bedford,They did not keep the car as they have a customers car, and one of there demos with the same problems, ie dash noise x2, egr valve/control unit ,transmission noise, I was told that Audi is sending one of its technical men to try and sort out the problems, lets hope he has more luck than the main agents. From a TDI owner trying to be patient.

If the noise goes away when you depress the clutch then it has to be gearbox related. If you also get the noise in neutral then it narrows it down to something like the front gearbox bearing surface in the main drive i/p shaft to the gearbox.

I assume the pitch of the noise varies with the revs applied ?

When the oils hot its obviously also much thinner and does not lubricate as well, perhaps its low on oil ?

Yes the noise goes away when i depress the clutch in neutral, and varies with revs,Low on oil at less than 1000 miles ??, seems strange that the vindis demo i tried this morning was almost as bad.

Hi!
Mine transmits strage noises when in 5th gear, full throttle, between 2500-3000 rpm.

To decrease the sound I have to hold the gear stick!!! This reduces the vibration...

Have you noticed this?
A2day

Have noise in all gears, but no vibration ,holding stick is no help. Thanks for the input regards Quickbow

update! Audi Technical have told the dealer that even if they change the transmission, the noise might still be there, As the problem is a noisey lay shaft transmiting noise to the alu/ body. It looks like they want to remove dash for problems 1-2, then pad out egr valve (problem 3) I will have to put up with the transmission problem. Vindis Bedford have refused a refund, they say they only need to repair problems under warranty,so i have sent them a letter rejecting the car, and asking for a full refund on the grounds that it is not of merchantable quality, and not fit for the purpose it was sold for. has any other member had problems obtaining a refund?

Looking at your signature (and mileage) then it's only going to be a few months old so you have a good case. If you look in What Car? (the latest May issue due out soon) or this weeks Autoexpress (I can't remember which now!) there is a section on the new law coming in re new vehicle defects. Well worth a read. Basically I beleive the dealer has to prove the fault doesn't exist. I also think their is a time scale though so read up on it first.

Main thing is to make a note NOW of all dealer visits, letters, phone calls etc as you will forget and then you can hit them. Unless they do the right thing and offer a no-quibble refund.

Good luck and let us know how you get on or if you need any help.

I got the info on Euro News site, it seems that the Dti have not yet issued any Uk reguation, to implement the EU Consumers Guarantees Directive, on which the new laws are based.(It seems the law came into force on Jan 1 2002 in euro/land). You are right, the car is only 10 weeks old, I had trouble with the tracking in the first week, (still not 100%) then its been downhill all the way since. I have just seen a letter on the top Gear Site,Chris H, Had two A2 with gearbox problems, and rejected both,( I have sent him E mail for info) The forum also gets a word . Thanks for the input Runboy, Regards Q/bow

update,,,,Vindis Bedford have said no to a refund, on the grounds that the car can be repaired under warranty, ie new gearbox ( If they feel the noise level is signifcantly higher on my car, and not deemed to be of normal operation), remove dash, pad out EGR valve, + tracking. I have not used the car since returning from Vindis on 10 March, they don,t seem to have taken on board the sale of goods act, It looks like another letter is called for, Will keep you posted

update,,,, Audi Uk have sent me a letter, saying that I must first let Vindis of Bedford repair faults first , Then If this does bring a satisfactory conclusion, Vindis will be in a position to assit me in rejecting the car. What a cheek,it seems that Audi Uk take no notice of the sale of goods act. (ongoing)

At last a refund, I took the car back to Vindis of Bedford on the 19 May, but they will not release money untill they have V5. This had to go back to dvla to retain the registration number. This is a bit of a cheek, as we never got the V5 when we picked up the car.Rang Audi UK to try and sort out the problem, but they never returned calls again. (as if they care) Will keep you posted.

Germans have had it, I think I will try japo next. Anybody interested in my old registation A2 FVN Best offer secures

My past experiences of gearbox rattles made me ask the same question you have asked.
i had and have the bearing type rattle in the morning and it seems to disappear when you depress the clutch.
When i had a vw polo it was a common noise especailly in the morning when everything was cold.
i asked when i was having the car serviced what the noise was and was told it was the final drive bearing rattling within the housing of itself and they could change it if i required but there was no guarantee of being improved.
The manufacturer of the bearing is "SKF" and they said it was something they were looking into but this would not cause any damage or wear to any of the moving components.
However the noise disappeared once the car gearbox oil was warm.
VW gave this rattle a name and was called "cold start rattle and is well known by VW.
Now the noise that seems to be coming from my gearbox and as described by yourself is i believe the final drive bearing this i don't think is anything to worry about you can get variations on the loudness of the noise depending on the time the bearing was produced.
Other noises noticed are the starter shaft starting and stopping this is mounted at the front or rear of the gearbox internally and can be heard as and when you change gear as a clacking noise just audible over the engine this is more noticable in lower gears such as the 1st and 2nd gears this again is completly normal as described by VW/Audi technicians.

Hope this sheds some light on to the likely hood of different noises being heard by yourself from your A2.

Cheers
