o.k. i know this has been an ongoing concern for many a2 owner's
But i have had my a2 for 1 year now and had a new set of front tyres fitted when i recieved the car after having done 8000 miles, now i have 30,000 miles on the clock and there is some wear left in the tyres, but i have noticed the wear of the tread is more on the inside of both front tyres.
is this normal if not !! what is wrong with the car and what do i need to do to correct it since 14,000 miles out of mitchelins i think is not bad, but never had a car that wears the tyres down on the front such as the a2
does.

Please help [21][16][?]

cheers

Hi Andrew, I recently had my front tyres replaced at 26,000 miles - it's only the first time they've been replaced. It wasn't a cheap exercise but Kwik Fit mobile came the day I phoned them with the correct Michelin tyres and fitted them both within an hour. I'm not expecting to have to change them again for another 26,000 miles, so I'm not sure what's gone wrong with your tyres. Unless you've been doing a few too many wheel spins!

As for the wear, it may be is your tracking, but Audi charge something ridulous (hundreds) for 4 compterised wheel alignment, but I noticed that AmD (http://www.auto-amd.com/a2.asp) charge only £50 + adjustment for the same service, so it may be worth investigating this.

I remember on my first A2 the tyres seemed to be wearing moreso on the outer edges of the two front tyres. It was noticeable when compared to the rears. I maintained the tyre pressures as per the owners manual for an unladen vehicle.

When I got my new A2 last November I checked the tyre pressures on delivery, two were under inflated! I have inflated them to 31 Psi which is to the upper end of the scale as per the instruction manual but this has cured it in my case, as the tyres after 7,500 miles, seem to be more square across the tread pattern and wearing evenly. On delivery the tread depth was 9mm I'll check what it is now after 7,500 miles.

So I guess I'd check the tyre pressures to start with.

I've had the 4 wheel lazer alignment done before on another car. Well worth the £60.00 or so. That was at a place called Pro-Align in Northampton.

But i had the 4 wheel alignment done recently and that has come back o.k. since they did that under warranty for me since i said it was bad for tyres to go after 8000 miles. so i know since jan of this year everything was o.k. and adjusted correctly to audi spec.
When i asked the engineer if this was a common thing they said no !! it was probably due to the rear wheels being out of alignment with the front wheels.
i also asked how do the wheels become out of alignment and they said if you go over a real bad pot hole it knocks the alignment out but only in degrees not mm.
So i have explored the alignment theory out already just thought there was something structurally wrong with my front suspension to cause the cambered tread wear i am experiencing.

But Stuart thanks for you advice i might try AMD to see if they can shed some new ideas onto the situation.

Cheers

hmm...

i have noticed that the front tread is wearing more on the sides too...

our a2 is just several months old...

i now try to check the tire pressure every week as i think they were slightly under-inflated from the dealer...

This was a timely reminder to check my tyre pressures which I did at the weekend. All were under inflated by varying degrees.
Fronts I inflated to 33 psi and rears to 31 psi. The tread depth after 7,500 miles is 7mm compared to 9mm when new.

Modest wheel alignment problems at the front caused my car to have excessive wear on the inside of one front tyre. The measurement is called camber, I think: the tyre is leaning inwards at the top (but not so you would notice.) Beware: my local tyre fitter told me his alignment computer said this is not adjustable - my Audi dealer had the tool to adjust it.

Took my car to an independant audi garage and they tracked the car again everything was within tolerance.
The camber of the front wheels is at 4 degrees inwards at the top of the wheel Audi standard!!
My car was correct to all standards audi set for the A2.
The garage could not after the check had been carried out say why the tyres had worn in such a way but i have noticed the tyres have leveled off recently and are wearing centrally.
Have to wait and see how they go had 17000 miles out of my tyres so far got a fair ammount of tread left on them.
i have my own suspicions as to why the tyres have worn that way i think it could be due to a rear drivers side tyre having a slow puncture causing the wheels at the front to compensate for the drag caused by the rear wheel loosing pressure.

i will keep you posted.
