Under the boot floor...

Hi there, not sure if this is the right section for this, but...

Under the boot floor on the right, there's a plastic 'cage' which I think from searching would hold a nav dvd drive on some models.
Firstly, mine has some cables that appear attached/mounted to the back of that empty cage - what would they be for???

Secondly, that section is surrounded by a larger metal (ally?) cage, presumably for protection.
If I was maximising space under there, could I remove those metal walls, or do they serve some kind of strengthening purpose too???

I'm looking at it thinking I could get/use a bit more volume than the bose subwoofers did!

Also, I know it's not really the right section, but does anyone know what the bose subs normally sell for on their own?
There's one on ebay but £70 seems a bit strong for an experiment, to dismantle and probably break!!!

I think the cables you refer to may well be attached to the aerial diversity unit which aids signal reception to the radio.

Second that, the cables are for the diversity unit that's mounted on the back side of the cage.

The entire under-boot-floor compartment is a plastic well that protrudes down through a hole in the aluminium floorpan. So I wouldn't go cutting any metal around it.

go above the base floor and under the subfloor, that's what I did. You have about 150mm to play with at that point.

And the bose sub is literally just a 5" or so, across the entire section, long and thin.

The under boot floor is plastic?
I didn't even tap it, just assumed it would be aluminium!
I'll check again!!!

I hear you bretti and was thinking along those lines, but am thinking about keeping boot space!

I've not measured, but looks like you could fit a reasonable enclosure for a 10", maybe even a 12" at a squeeze, in an L shape around the battery!!!

There is space under the drivers feet for a good sized sub, that would be my choice in a custom made MDF enclosure.

I've not investigated the under floor spaces in the front yet.
Didn't even consider fitting a sub in there - I can't believe there'd really be enough volume in there?
I'll have a look when I get a chance!

What sub do you want to use? I figured you could get around 10l max. and then you've the problems of heat and sealing it, which is why I binned it in favour of the 8" in the between-floor space in the boot. Have enough space to the right for a couple of old-school amps, too

the space next to the battery could possibly give you 25l if you really pushed it. You still have to work out how to deal with the carpet, though.

.. while I remember: I seriously considered dropping my 10" in there. But then I found the magnet is so large and the basket so deep that I would have to come back above floor level anyway. An 830452 Peerless 10" would work but something that's deeper won't due to the ledge at the side. Then we're back to shallow 10 or 12s, and you might as well drop a nicely sized box in the midfloor and dump the amps in the space below. Keeps beefy cables to a minimum and it's easy to hide.

I'll need to have another look at the weekend.
I've got loads of subs knocking about, but mostly 12's I think.
I've got a DLS 12" that would work in 28L/0.99cuft, but I think I always used to do about 1.5cuft iirc.
Hadn't actually considered the mounting depth!
I am considering getting something smaller - so we'll see.

Next problem is, most of my stuff is buried deep in the garage 'cos I haven't done an install for a few years at least!!!

The A2 has a cheap 8" in 14l. It's good but not awesome. Some cheap-ish silk tweeter 6.5 comps in the front in dodgy adapters. PG 350.2s x2 for the fronts and a 300.1 for the sub. All Class A/B, Pioneer HU.
The SX4 has a dual coil GZ 8" in 18l sealed. That's pretty good, running off 2 channels of a Soundigital 4x100 amp. Not bad, but the HU is the limiting factor there, it has some really strange phase issues in the treble with BT sources.
The Superb.... that has a pair of Helix S62 in the front doors, tweeters on the dash, a C-DSP 6x8 and a Soundigital 4x100 running the fronts (should be converting it to active this week). 1.6kW of Soundigital powers an SDX10 in the boot. Sounds awesome and it's only going to get better. Want to add another 4x100 for mids and then the rears.

The Superb sounds like it will errr sound..... superb!!!

I've got some DLS & CDT stuff that might fit in the A2, so potentially some of that going in.
I think most of the amps I've got are a bit big though!!!
Got a Pioneer h/u from a few years back that I'll stick in, (got bluetooth & dab).

My BMW E30 touring had/has Rainbow comps up front with a JL 13W7 and 1000/1 amp filling the boot!!!!!!
I don't think I've ever had smaller than 12" subs in my own cars - mostly Orion and older JBL stuff - I was known at one point for having four Orion competition 12"s in the boot of a Granada Scorpio!!!
Yet weirdly my home a/v setup only has a pair of 10"s.

The Superb drops really, really nicely, the SDX10 is a *monster* and it's in a super-solid and heavy box. Double 15mm ply baffle, about 2kg of gravel glued onto the base and the rest is 21mm ply. Weighs about 35kg with the box... m6 hurricane bolts x 8 holding it in place. Newton Faulkner's version of Teardrop is just effortless and smacks *hard* when it drops.
Need to tune some more, will be in the car for a few hours Monday so will be trying to get things a little better ahead of that. Fronts are Lowpassed at 55Hz, Sub highpassed at 120. Will push the tweeters to 2.5kHz and see how they sound. Current EQ attached. The shelf above 4k is a bit much, I need to back off, but there was some residual harshness I didn't like.

measurements before those EQs (need to measure again, haven't done it since): (this is with Zoom H2 and exported sweeps from REW)

Still have a hole at 400Hz, will be trying to fix that with a 2.5" mid on the a-pillar. The A2's tweeters are also on the dash and are pretty good, will have measure the Axtons and see how it looks.

Nice, really doing it properly!
I've never got quite that far, my installs have always been 'good enough' tweaking by ear, then I'll end up changing cars again!!!

Interesting to see your sub passed at 120hz - I always like it around there and have been told many times I should be cutting it much lower!
