Upgrade to gel battery

Does anyone know if a 90AH 850A GEL battery would be ok to fit on a A2 1.4td . Thanks

Only if the width at the bottom clamp, height, terminals’ size, shape, polarity and position are an exact match. Gel batteries are best for deep discharge / leisure applications. I would only consider such a battery if I was getting it free, the standard battery is more than up to the job.

I thought Gel batteries were used in cars with engine stop/start and they are very expensive. They also only charge to 80% to allow for regenerative engine breaking. I have one on my BMW and its coming to end of life already at three years old.
As said, why bother unless its free?

Why would want/need one? They are no different from normal batteries except with silica added to the electrolyte and are therefore more spill resistant.

They also only charge to 80% to allow for regenerative engine breaking.

Surely that depends on the car, not the battery?

I think gel batteries also resist deep discharge sulfation damage to the plates better than liquid electrolyte, but, as others have said, that is totally irrelevant in a car unless you plan on using it only very very rarely so discharge will be a problem. Just get a decent battery with a 5 year warranty and a decent CCA the actual number of Amp hours is pretty irrelevant unless you do a lot of sitting around with the engine off and all the electrics on.

Well the factory battery is starting to struggle now , ive been given a range rover battery, i know i can make this fit. Its better than paying nearly £100 for a new one .so i might aswell use it .

We bought a Yuasa 76Ah battery from German and Swedish on Tuesday for £65 delivered. I believe they still have the offer going until Christmas.

Well in that case... yay! Good luck to you.

What is the RR battery you've been given? Photos of it would be handy to help you know about fitment.

Personally, I've only ever used Bosch Silver as a replacement and would recommend them also - 5 year warranty included.

I am very pleased with the Advanced battery I bought: manufactured by Varta and branded and sold by a company local to me.

I went overboard and bought one of the Stop/Start ones (AGM 110) in the hope that one day someone technically gifted can convert the A2 to mimic stop/start, even if it requires the key to be turned or a button to be pressed

hi, the battery is the same dimensions just a bit longer , ive got to mod the right hand side for it to fit in.

I wouldn't do that - the boot floor is not something you want to be messing with ideally as it's integral to the shell of the car. If the battery won't fit (and I've gone about as far as it's possible to go on the big battery front), then don't make it fit, just get one that does. What happens when you've done all the cutting and you then find that the thing won't hold charge, now or in a year's time?
