Upgrading to Symphony I or II

Hey! this is my first posting and I think I have a slightly difficult question to start with!
Currently I have the standard audio config. with Chorus and standard speakers. Together with the climate control this leaves (Radio top spot and Climate bottom) this leaves an empty slot in the audio dashboard. I have now been offered a Symphony I or II (double DIN) depending on what I want to spend. Unfortunatly on my searches through the web I found on www.audi.de, that those Radios can not be fitted in retrospect.:( Can anyone help me?? What is the problem? Shouldn't I have enough space in the dash?? Is there a prob with the wiring? I am a bit confused here!![?]

P.S. Funnily enough that problem does not seem to exist in any other Audi Model!

In my opinion, you should be able to retrofit a Symphony (I or II, depending on your A2 model year, the Symphony II needs CAN-Bus-Wiring, which is only availiable on 2002 model A2´s, at least I think). But you should be able to take out the lower part of the console and lower the Climate Controls one slot down.....at least that´s what I thought when I pulled the Chorus II radio on my A2 out.

Bye, Frido. (who also is eyeing all the Symphony II´s on eBay...)

Thanks for that info!!
Just a quick further question on this!! Model 2002?!? That means Year of build after when? Or how can I figure that out? Also Symphony I should then work on models before 2002?

One thing I would say guys, and at first I was thinking the same way as you, is that the bottom slot (the empty one) has a rounded bottom!. I'm not sure how a DIN size unit would fit-I've never tried it so I can't say yes or no.

Is the bottom tray just that-a tray that can be removed to leave a perfect DIN slot?. If so then your OK, but if it is a round moulding then your stuffed!.

The reason why I looked into it was because I was looking at fitting the Blaupunkt 5 CD changer in the vacant slot at the bottom...

So basically that would mean there r two different kinds of middle compartments:
-One that seems to be the standard, and
-one that is a little bit bigger so that it can hold a double DIN??

Is that what u'r suggesting??

If you look at some of the other posts below this one (about CD changers etc) you will see that I raised the question about using all three slots (one for my concert II, one for the climate and one for the CD changer). Someone then mentioned to me that the lowest slot/cubby-hole has rounded edges at the bottom-this is true.

However, what I believe is that the central console does have three DIN slots-one is used for the headunit, one is used for the climate, and one contains a tray/cubby-hole as a self contained unit. If you look around the tray you will see it isn't moulded into the centre console, so I presume you can slot it out and be left with a perfect DIN slot.

This is all theory as I haven't tried it yet!. I like this idea as it means I could fit a CD changer in without running cable to the boot area.

I suppose really I need to take the A2 to a specialist ICE fitter and seek their advice.

My A2 was built in 9/2002 and is a 2002 model.... But Symphony I´s should work on older A2´s...

Just to understand that properly!! My car is a 05.01 (Bj 05.01) make, is that a symphony I or II?? When does was the CAN-Bus introduced??

Ok!! I finally was able to get hold of a friend of mine who works at audi!! His reply to the question was: If the car currently has a Chorus build in and is an older model (mine counts as older) it lacks the CAN-Bus. Without the CAN-Bus the Symphony might even work but maybe only for an hour or the lighting will shut off after a while and all sorts of other probs. In other words, frido u were right! Also besides the Console question the switching of the radios is not an option.....full stop!! [XX(]

@McMuffin:

I think they switched to the CAN-Bus and newer Chorus/Symphony-Radios around August 2001....
