Can anyone explain how this works? I really would appreciate some help.

My engine management light has been staying on, I took it to a mechanic who said he knew about these things. He looked at the car and stuck one part of the cable that he had, a bit like a scart cable, under the steering wheel and the other end of the cable was put into a handheld Hewlett Packard device. I take it this was just a palmtop.

Can anyone tell me is the handheld device a special thing that mechanics buy that has the programme installed, or is it just a normal palm held computer that you buy the software for?

Three error codes came up on the handheld device, he then wrote the 3 numbers down on a piece of paper and went into his garage, came back a few minutes later and said that one of the problems was the Lamber sensor.

Do you need a special handheld device or can you just buy the cable and plug one end into a laptop and get software for this?

I really would appreciate an explanation on how this works.

He charged me £35.00 and advised me to return with the car so that he can replace the lamber sensor and reset the engine managemen sensor on my dashboard and he said said everything should be fine then.

most garages have these diagnostic kits of some description or other. its pretty much a necessity with modern car electronics. You can buy the lead and software for your PC as many vag com members have done (theres varying quality of product I think - check eBay and you'll see for yourself) - but I think theres a bit of skill in interpretation of the codes. as i am no mechanic its something i leave to the pros.

Hi Mr B
Vag Com (now called VCDS) is a package (interface lead and software) which converts your laptop into a diagnostic tool which is probably more powerful than the genuine Audi/VW/Seat/Skoda workshop versions. There are many immitations on e.bay which use a very early version of the VagCom software. They seem to have varying capabilities - from not working at all to reading most fault codes. I'm not sure if any can programme / code modules or reset the variable service indicator etc
This web site will answer any further questions - http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/vag-com-faq.html
They also have a diagnostic code library here - http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/Category:Fault_Codes
If you'r interested Gendan Automotive is one of the better agents for VagCom

Cheers Spike
