Variable Service

Just wondering, what kind of milages other owners are getting from their TDi engined A2's before the service indicator lights up. I know it depends on how the car is driven etc. The reason I ask is because my first A2 seemed to be programmed for 30,000 miles/2 years. When I sold it last year it had done 16,000 miles and the service indicator showed next service in 14,000 miles.

My current A2 showed something like service in 9,000 miles when I took delivery of it last November. This did not alarm me too much as they do show a low reading, even after being reset after service, and this does settle over the next few weeks.

However, I took it back to the dealer after a few weeks and pointed this out. The reply I got was they are set for 20,000 miles/2 years. Surely this is not right - I thought they were set for "up to 30,000 miles". My current mileage is 7,000 and the service indicator shows next service in 11,900 miles.

On new cars are these set at the factory or are they set by the dealer.

I have no idea where the numbers come from, or how they are set, but I can comment on what I saw on my brand new Tdi

At delivery (10km on the clock) it showed about 15.000km (about 9k miles) to service.
After driving it around for about 800km (500 miles), it showed about 24.500 (15k miles).

If you'd like, I could check again to see what it's at now. I'm at 2200 km now and I seem to push the car too much, since average fuel consumption has been under 1:20 (over 5 liter/100km) (don't ask me about mpg - how much litre is a gallon? 4.5?). Maybe the figure has gone down.

In any case, I think the car itself makes up the figure, but that's just my 2 cts.

Thanks for that, it would be useful to know what your current reading is.
I filled up yesterday, I got 554 miles to that tank of diesel and the DIS showed an average of 61.3 mpg. This is mainly a quiet 25 minute, 11 mile commute in the morning through town and a 15 mile return trip with a blast on the motorway.

Thanks, short stop starts are a killer for mpg figures. I'm lucky in that respect, I'm in work for 7.30 but I leave at 4.00 missing the traffic.

Hi Shaf,

Just got out of my car, so I can tell you what my km-to-service-reading is.
Current ODO says about 2300km (1450 miles). Km to service is now a whopping 40500km (over 25000 miles).

And if a gallon is 4.53 litres, then my average (over just 3 tanks) was about 55mpg.

But to come back to your original worries: do all of the figures so far differ that much from what your car is showing? I'd say that on average they're comparable, giving everbody's different driving habits. And to make things more variable, the service-predictions in my car show that the car itself can develop quite a different opinion after just a few more miles.

Thanks Edo,

Yes it seems my readings are consistent with others but I note your readings in miles do suggest yours is programmed for up to 30,000 miles (1450 + 25,000). This was the case with my first A2. I haven't changed my driving style but my current A2 seems to be programmed for up to 20,000 miles (current milage 7,000 + next service due in 11,900)

We'll see in less than 12 months whether mine is programmed for 30k too ;)
In the meantime, if I don't forget, I'll keep an eye on the figures I get. If it gets out of the ordinary I'll post it here (or somewhere new).

I've got 2400 miles to go before a first service - which will then be 31,600 miles! The car will be just short of 3 years old - I get the impression that the service bill will amount to a 'normal' annual service x 3. In effect all you seem to save is the inconvenience of your car being off the road once instead of three times. Call me cynical but my annual service on my old A4 tdi used to cost £90 + £120 + £90 = 3 years.

I have a Nov 02 1.4 TDi Sport, 10,000miles on the clock 18000 to first service.

You HAVE to use the expensive "thin" Castrol oil to maintain the long-variable service interval. If you use 1L of any other oil then the service interval reverts to fixed (lower) mileage.

Thanks Foghorn, you're doing really well. Will that be your first service or did you get it serviced at 2 years old?

Thanks Ricardo, I've only ever topped up with the "thin" Castrol that was supplied with the car. The only thing I can think of is that the computer has calculated that on my average mileage I'll do 20,000 miles approx in 2 years which would equate to 20,000 miles.

HeHe, the reason why the service indicator says coming up in 9000mls evcen when brand new is cos the car always auto defaults to 9000mls and adjust higher or lower depending on how u drive it.

Foghorn am I right in saying that your warranty would have ceased at the end of your second year as the variaable servicing is as indicated or every 2 years which ever comes first ?

I think the vaiable servicing works out more expensive unless you travel over 30,000 within 2 years. The average is what 10 or 12,000 miles per year. So the average person depending on driving styles will need their A2 serviced evert 2 years or approx 20-24,000 miles. So for me it will probably work out more expensive as my car will be serviced more often than people going until indicated ie upto 32,000.
