Vibrating steering wheel.

Thnx Steve.

I just noticed that they did not change the brake pads when they fixed the disc. I took some photos of them and they seem very uneven. Should they really be looking like this?

New / refaced discs should only be fitted with new pads.
The face of the he pads have worn to the shape of the old discs shape and so there will not be full contact and braking power will be reduced.
The cost of pads is not excessive and they should have fine it without even thinking.

Not the sort of garage I would recommend.

So they guy called me today.

He said he couldnt see any problem with the disc directly. But he also said he couldnt rule it out either. He thought it was either the disc or it could be something with the front axis. Not sure exactly what. He said he could fitt new discs for around £270 or have the currrent ones sent away and repaired for £60-£80.

Since the discs are not that old and he wasent sure it would fix the problem I went with the cheaper alternative.

Any thoughts? What could be wrong with the front axis? Should I have went with new ones directly?
Hi,

I have 1.4 TDI 2003. I either have noticed steering wheel shaking when applying a sudden braking from 80 to 70mph or 70 to 60mph on the motorway. I note that steering wheel does not shake so much upon swift braking at high speed.
My MOT was done recently 2000 miles ago, brake pads were new and the brake disks seem well and good literally less than 0.5mm worn out. So it seems that brake disks may not be thae reason.

However when I took my car for front wheels tracking, the technician to me change Tie Rod & the Tie Rod Ends for both front Left & Right wheels.

I presume if disk brakes are OK then the problem should be toward inner side of the front wheels such as Tie Rods or Rotation Shaft or Stablizer Link Bar.

Also another technical explanation I could think about steering wheel shaking could be that when you apply sudden braking at high speeds on motorway, the "heat" generated from (disks and brake pad), the friction may cause loosening of braking system resulting in steering wheel shaking. The ABS may not be to blame for the problem.

The above is my honest opinion. I am not a mechanic.
