BBC: VW launches new UK diesel scrappage scheme

VW's UK scheme will apply to any diesel vehicle that has emissions standards lower than Euro 5 and was registered before 2010.
Incentives range from £1,800 off a new VW Up! to £6,000 off a Sharan people carrier.
Electric and hybrid vehicles, which attract government grants, will be included in the scheme.
So, for example, an e-Golf, which gets a £4,500 grant from the government, will also have VW trade-in saving of £5,500, adding up to £10,000 off in total.

An e-golfs list price is from £31,680 before any government electric grants. A normal golf ranges from c£18,000 to c£36,000.

Of course, devil can be in the small print and how many people have the readies or are prepared to take a loan in the current economic climate, but some company car buyers might be attracted so they can also wave the green flag, if just nominally. Some level of discount would have been available anyway for cash just for the asking.

Interesting. I did the calculation this morning. If they give me:
Trade in value = £2,000
Scrappage= £5,500
Grant = £4,500
Total = £12,000

Means an e-Golf should cost me £20,000

It is enticing until you realise the usual new car bugbear - depreciation - after 3 years car is estimated to be worth £8,000. So I'm paying£12,000 over 3 years for a car that can't take me 125 miles and back without recharging. £4,000 per year... I think I'll keep my A2.

I don't think they will give you Trade in value AND Scrappage. One or the other more likely. If they scrap the car then it has no trade value.

Could see a lot of serviceable cars being scrapped. One green view is that assets should be kept as long as possible due the high energy embedded from when an item is manufactured. It's a dilemma when the asset is polluting during it's use.

Dealers/manufacturers must be gambling that few persons with very old cars will be trading up to a new car, so it's more of a gesture than something that is going to hit their pocket. Such people do exist though! I've bought a number of cars new in my life and kept them until they went to the scrappy through old age! But I tell myself my A2 is for life and will go on and on.....

I personally think you'll be able to get a better deal by playing the dealers off against one another. They still have to hit sales targets.

I priced up a couple of options this morning and I'd still have to find alot of money just to get a car I would want, whereas I could get a year old model and it would be 8K cheaper just by looking around the web
