Water in Boot

Hi all

I'm a new member with a problem, my boot is full of water and all the side panels and carpets are soaking wet, right up to the rear seats. I had the same problem about 12 months ago, and after mopping all the water out of the boot I had no further problems until now.

Skipton01 has been extremely helpful with suggestions and after reading several closed threads from owners with the same problem, it seems the solution may lie with the rear light cluster gromit. Before I tackle the (what seems a major) job of removing the rear bumper to get to the offending area, I wonder if any other owners have had similar problems, and if so, can they offer any suggestions or solutions. Incidentally, the water in the boot is quite clean which would indicate that the water is not coming up off the road.

Same problem with mine, dried the boot out by leaving the flap on the boot floor open for a week. But after some rain last week had to mop out about half a pint of water yesterday. I think that removing the rear bumper is the only way to sort it, but as you have stated it doesn't look like a five minute job!!!

Sorry to hear you're having the same problem I had. My car has been back and forth to Audi for weeks trying to get this sorted. Originally it was thought the problem was the gromit you mention, but this didn't fix the problem. My car was recently with Audi for two weeks while they investigated it. At one point I was told water may be getting passed the sealant used when the ali panels are pressed. I had visions of the car being ripped to pieces to fix. Fortunately they discovered the water was getting in through a vent behind the rear bumper and also a rubber seal at the top of the hatch opening. So far so good - the boot is dry.

I know it isn't much consulation but the boot won't rust.

PS. On my TVR I've had to drill some holes in the bottom of the boot to let the water out!

mlarner,

Did you try clearing out the drainage hole/tube on the boot aperture first?
I had water in my V8S a while ago - an old wire coat hanger did the job!

Spooky - I've got a black A2 with red napper and a TVR too!

The TVRs are a 1980 3000S convertible (leaks like a sieve) and a 1989 350i FHC ~ soon to be a 3.2 TT.

Many thanks to all who contributed to try and help me with the problem, even the humorous replies helped raise a smile when all seemed grim.

Hopefully, the problem has been sorted by removing the wheel, inner wheel arch, outer wheel arch and rear bumper the culprit seemed to be a vent under the rear light cluster. The vent has a spongy rubber seal around, which seems to have perished. I'm surprised that not more people have suffered with the same problem.

We seem to have rectified it (at least the boot is dry after 2 days of rain) by a generous helping of silcon sealant all around the offending vent, with a dab on the small gromit for good luck. Just hope now that the other side does not fail and even if it does, we now know how to get to it.

:) Hi Mike

Couldn't have done it without your help, thanks a million I'm really grateful.

It looks as tho' you've got your car sorted as well, hope everything goes ok for you.

 first of all thanks for all you guys who are advising and passing information which is very very helpful..
my cars air vent was broken firstly tried to fix that one but couldn't then bought new air vent from audi, opened and closed everything, and was very happy that problem fixed but again rain and again nice water in boot, then bought silicone sealant, again nice big job but this time it didn't take too long as i am quite use to open and close this all stuff now... but still after silicone, rain again and water again. thanks to audi engineers who did great job making this vent there and allowing all roof water to come on that vent.. anyway after reading more threads today and watching some pictures (thanks to that guy), i will buy another sealant and will apply good amount which may be help me..

Hi gg19 - Sorry to hear you're having problems with water getting into the boot. Possibly if you follow my previous posts this may help you to solve the problem.

It is now 6 years since I solved my problem and just like to report that all is still dry (hope I'm not tempting fate!).

Still have the same A2 (just clocked up 64,000 miles) and we are now looking for a good 1.4 TDI for hubby.

I too have water in the boot of my A2, i ve had the car for about 2 years now , only noticed it around xmas time, cant afford to put it in the garage at the moment though.

The back seats and floor are getting wet to from it, very worring.

...so replace the vents. It's a two-hour job. The process is covered elsewhere on the forums, but the short version is "remove bumper, replace vents, replace bumper".

ok thanks spike and kivi, will give it a go.

Edit.

Just realised i have to take both rear wheels off to get the the rear bumper off!!!
Dont make anything easy do they!
