Water pump fail and Timing belt slippage

First post and it's not a happy one. I've benefitted hugely from the wealth of knowledge on this Forum and it's made ownership of my first A2 a much richer experience.
The step be step guides that I've found here must have saved me £100's...

My 1.6 FSI has been a brilliant car but last month the water pump failed causing the timing belt to jump from the pulley. Is it inevitable that serious valve damage would have taken place?

It's done over 170,000 miles so my question is should I call it a day ,if so, Is it best to try to sell as a complete car or break for spares. I've had estimate of £1000-£1400 to fix potential engine damage, including new water pump and timing belt. I'd be lucky to sell for much more than that.

Would be grateful for any advice particularly if anyone else has had a similar experience. How much did it cost to repair and were you happy with the results?

Many thanks in advance.

Paul

I would suspect valve damage (they are tiny and delcate) That is a bonus because instead of smashing the pistoin crown to bits they bend and lock up.

But it is not cheap to have the head removed and replace all of the valves and some guides perhaps.

I had this happen on a 1.4 petrol. I bought it with a broken belt to "rescue it".

The end result was a LOT of labour costs and even then it had a missfire (it was a supected sticking valve) so another strip down to resolve.

I would recomend replacing the engine with a used one on eBAy or similar.

If you are careful, you can find some good ones cheap.

I have just sold a very good 1.6 FSI engine with gearbox and all ancillaries for £200.

There are bargains around, so I would suggest an engine change perhaps.

Thank you both for your advice. I like the replacement engine idea but I don't think Mrs S will approve ;) I'm going to try my luck on Autotrader for few days before offering it up for spares. Hopefully, this will not be my last A2!

Cheers,
Paul

I had my tdi 90 belt snap on me just before Christmas and I was expecting the worst. But surprisingly there were only some bent valves and no piston/cylinder damage:

The car is still in bits at work as I have been too busy with work abroad and rennovations at home (I brought the car as a winter backup, my rear wheel drive electric is a bit dangerous in the snow, so no rush).

I think a set of valves, hydraulic lifters, cambelt/water pump kit and full service will set me back around £200 in parts to get it back on the road.

I have spent 12 hours on it so far and at least the same again, so if you're paying someone labour it probably wouldnt be economical.

You can see the usual indentation on each inlet valve where they hit Good to see that the dameage was a LOT less than you would have expected.

I thought that at first too, but its actually just the buildup from the combustion outside the injection bowl. You can see the circle also on the head too
