Water pump.

Just purchased a 1.4 petrol A2. It came with a timing belt kit but I need a water pump. There are hundreds on eBay, could anyone recommend a particular make or is it best to pay a bit extra and go to GSF or Euro car parts?

Go for a known brand and buy from either a trusted E-Bay seller with huge feedback numbers, or as you say, Euro's, GSF (or Autolec or Motor Parts Direct (MPD) if near to you).

Almost all factors will do a basic unbranded or semi branded aftermarket range and then a better 'OEM' (original equipment manufacturer) version. In a critical area (safety, engine longevity) the latter is what you want. Your factor should point you in right direction.

In case of water pump, the labour / your time is the biggest input, and the price difference between a water pump
that might fail next year or give ten years life is marginal.

Also, don't believe just because a part has a long warranty it's any better. Co's use a long warranty to wind people into cheap parts: Euro's Lion brand batteries being case in point. Dreadful, dreadful things: absolute garbage, but people buy them thinking they can't be too bad, look at the warranty.

Fact of matter is it's just a numbers game: some cars get written off, some sold, invoices lost, can't be bothered to claim, claim denied.

Better just to buy OEM quality from a seller that's big enough to have proper insurance and aftersales service if it all goes wrong. I don't buy critical parts from small house-based e-Bay sellers. Parts could well be fake and they certainly won't have the clout to offer good back-up if it goes wrong.

My car came with a Lion battery....contingency plans are in place for the winter!
My V70 came with a Lion AGM (yellow) battery. Completely failed at one month old. Replaced with a Varta and all was well thereafter.

Well known in the trade for being problematic: just Google it.
