We now have a bolt in 6 speed gearbox for the FSI

This is another good point. I'd only been looking at the top gears, but the short gears are also less than ideal. It does mean, theoretically at least, that the final drive could be lengthened without creating hill-start problems.

I've never seen the inside of the FSI's gearbox, but if it's anything like the TDI's 'box, increasing the length of the final drive is quite an involved process, because the toothed wheel that drives the diff' is an integral part of the gearbox's output shaft. You therefore need to swap all 6 gears onto alternative shafts.

Cheers,

Tom

The lupo gti gearbox 6 speed mounts on without any modification and the FSI gearbox also fits the lupo gti however, the gearing is lower than the FSI in 6th

Seems a bit of a non starter then.

Worth noting however the lupo gti, the a2 1.4 and 1.6 petrols are all 02T gearboxes, and the Audi a1 2011-2014 I know also has a 6 speed 02T no idea of specs however

That’s interesting. Needs someone to be the pioneer and take the plunge ?

Bit more technical info..

The A1 was fitted with 5 different gearboxes.
02T 5 speed in the 1.2 TFSI
02R 5 speed in the 1.6 TDI of which there are 2 versions
02U 6 speed in the 1.4 TFSI of which there are 2 versions.
0A8 6 speed in the 2.0 TDI of which there are 2 versions.
0AM 7 speed dual clutch s-tronic of which there are 6 versions

Could not pin down individual gear ratios accurately so more investigation required

That's interesting as that is not what we would have expected given @PlasticMac 's posts on gear ratios - You must have a different gearbox code from what he was looking at (unless the resource he used was incorrect of course).

For other forum members wanting to follow in your footsteps, can you take a look and share the gearbox code? That would be a useful contribution to the greater good - as would some driving impressions: How does the engine behave at under 3000 RPM in top, as some have said it would be gutless unless revving above this point? Does it have legs to easily accelerate without changing down? Any impact on noise / MPG?

These things would be really useful to have your full and frank view on.

My source was t'internet, so, perish the thought, could be duff.
@dj_efk says "1.6 FSI Turbo... What turbo?
Mac.

gearbox code HBM, i live in a very hilly area, pulls strong through all gears, i never go near 5 or 6 gear around town, with my set up 70 mph around 2.8-2.9k revs. 5th gear on the 6 speed box is like 5th in my old 5 speedbox. on my next motorway set i will note speeds though out all gears. 100% an improvement. all gears seems slightly longer in my opinion.

That is super interesting and I’m sure will be very useful for a number of users on here!

This is indeed very good news. The Pro Boost map has made the FSI more viable as a reliable alternative to the TDI's but the high revs at 70 made the FSI unsuitable for those who do a lot of miles.

ULEZ compliant, potentially more reliable than in the past and now a long 6th gear. Perhaps we have the ugly duckling syndrome for the FSI afterall :)

Ok folks you heard it here first, we now need to stop the breaking of poorly FSI’s while there are still some around / before they’re all gone!

With this news, for a determined DIY-er they can now be made reliable and with significantly better motorway manners for not much cash (albeit with a fair amount of time thrown at them) - perfect for those who are quiet with work at the moment, so for those who are looking for a project, consider saving a FSI!

I had a look lunchtime at the cost of the gearboxes and they are around £250-300. To be honest if I do this in the future then I would probably just buy an accident damaged Golf so that I could test the gearbox before fitment.

With the MYP conversation I did the first box has what looked like JB weld near the bearing, the second gearbox was a “recon” which has damage to one of the bearing mounts inside the case unfixable, this went back for repair to whom it was purchased from and then exactly the same the 3rd gearbox... that was ok and has been working well since.

I got a complete car for £130 non runner took the gearbox and 18 inch alloys, and got back £90 in scrap metal.
