[Weak Sun Visor Spring] - Repair with MIG welder.

OK,

Next up on the list was weakened sun visor. I only managed to take two pictures while I was at it so bear with me.

Once you take apart the business end (the pivoting end) you will see that there is a U-shaped spring that goes around the plastic shaft. This had sheared off on mine.

The assembly is easy to disassemble with a small flat-heat screwdriver by prising it apart. Inside you will find the broken spring (stainless), and the spring retainer (black-coloured piece of metal).

I used a small vise and the MIG welder set to weld 0.8mm. The spring is around that thickness so go easy on the wire speed. The results are seen below in the pictures. In the first picture the red line shows where the shear was.

The second picture shows the penetration on the inside and where it has to be filed down to make it flush again. Depending on your welding capabilities you may have to flatten the outside too. At least I had to!

The tricky bit it to put the spring retainer back on. The positions where it attaches are circled in red. There is no proper way really, try to find a position that suits you and a pair of pliers. Strong fingers are also a plus.

Put it all back together with a dab of white grease on the shaft and spring and you are good to go. Stronger than before really.
