what can i do?

here goes...i bought my audi a2 a month ago knowing it was a cat d when it was advertised.it had its mot cert, vic cert and i did a hpi check and it was all fine.i did have a few issues with it i.e some steering wheel vibration at high speed which i thought was the tracking,so i took it to an audi specialist garage.turns out there was a hole in the gearbox casing which was leaking oil,the clutch was badly worn and the brakes were badly corroded.the total cost of the repairs came to 2400!!!!!i did get a parts guarentee when i bought it from a car dealer, but as i cannot afford the repairs im not sure what my next step is.i have been advised not to drive my car too.im absolutely gutted as this was my first car too.any ideas what i can do?i plan on contacting the dealer at the weekend!

How many miles on the car?

Regarding the 2400, it'd be a lot cheaper if you went to a good independant garage. If you're in London it might be worth dropping Sarge a line. However the first thing you should do is to talk to the dealer you bought it from. I would talk to them now, not wait for the weekend!

Is it a petrol or a diesel?

--- Edit:

From the other thread I see that it is 39,000 miles. That seems rather early for the clutch to have gone. Normally I'd have expected something in the range of 90-120k for the clutch.

its a petrol 1.4.i took it to russell automotive in kingsbury london who specialise in german cars.it was under a 3 month parts guarentee, but none of this is covered unfortunately.gonna get on the blower to them now, think it may be a case of my word against theirs.cheers mike,i,ll pm spike!

This is a little tricky, isn't it? You bought it knowing it is a cat d, but was it advertised as a fully repaired and road worthy car? If you bought it 'as-is' it is hard to argue against. Other members on here are more familiar with consumer rights would be able to advise you better on this matter.

In case you have to foot the repair bill, if you're at Russell, then you're looking at a reputable garage charging £60+VAT per hour labour (10% discounted rate) and genuine Audi parts (I have mine serviced there). Clutch, you want new which isn't too expensive (IIRC, <£150 for the kit), but a broken gearbox may be replaced with a used one to save cost. They probably won't source a used one for you but you can try quoting just the fitting. However, the vibration needs to be checked so that nothing is bent on the engine side, flywheel ...etc. For the record, I used to drive in zone 1 and my clutch had _nothing left_ at 46k miles.

To further save cost, you should order your replacement brakes from either EuroCarParts (Pagids) or a Mintex box set from ebay (~£60) and do the brakes yourself. Do the brake fluid while you're at it.

you're probably looking at £150 - £300 for a used FDM gearbox from ebay. Ask Steve and Co to quote again just installing a used gearbox and new clutch (they shouldn't rip you off on OE new parts anyway) and see.

cheers for the info!i just got off the phone with the dealership and they want to have a look at it themselves.good thing i got the diagnostic printout with me.obviously they were in denial, asking me if id done something whilst driving etc..i,ll see what they say tomorrow when it gets towed to them, otherwise i think getting the parts myself would be a better option!watch this space!

Might be an idea to give consumer direct a call as they will also advice you legally where you stand, so when you speak with the dealers you can let them know you've done your research

I believe he still has rights as the car was advertised as running well but 2months down the line its not fit for purpose, i had a similar problem and went through consumer direct and after a few stern letters stating different laws it was all sorted lol

cheers guys,im going to try to recover the advert on autotrader if i can.i,ll ring consumer direct first thing.feel a bit more positive after all your replies!

Mark,

Not sure if this helps but Cat D repaired cars don't need a VIC test, it's only Cat C that needs one

If the vehicle was described as Cat D then I think you would have grounds for mis-sold

quick update...made a few calls today and your right dan,it was a cat c car!they did advertise it as a cat d and now ive checked my invoice from them,it does say it was a cat c.i did however get a call from them today offering to take a look at it and replace the gearbox if they think its their fault.which they probably wont admit to!they did say that they would replace it for me at a discounted price.consumer advice were very helpful, they did advise me to let them have a look at it then ring them up again to see what my options are.keep y'all posted!

Did you manage to find the advert? If they were advertising a cat d but selling a cat c they are operating on very sticky ground. They could be reported to trading standards for trying to rip people off.

Cheers

David

I found that after speaking to consumer direct i felt even more confident facing the dealers as i was assured i was in the right

so i went to see the dealers thismorning as they agreed to replace the gearbox for me.started driving it away and found that i couldnt get into 3rd gear at all and the gearstick was rattling all over the shop.took it back to them and said if it isnt fixed next time i want my money back.absolutely gutted

Just reject the car if your not happy with it.

My A2 just had a vic check, they drove it in one door 4 minutes later it was out the other door.
Biggest load of rubbish I've ever seen oh and £41

Just got off the phone with the dealer and he told me that the gearbox they just put in was faulty.no s**t Sherlock!he said hes looking for another one now.I told him if its not sorted this week I want my money back.there's a lesson to be learnt somewhere in there people!

The gearchange cables will need setting up after the box is changed. Check out the intstuctions in the 'How To' section as I'm not convinced your dealer will know how to do it - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?13062-Gearchange-cable-adjust-reset
