What Diagnostic Tool is good? ... or anyone with one that could help me?

Hi,

I would like to to invest in a diagnostic scanner. Are the handhald scanners advertised on ebay around £30 any good?

The reason for my interest is today the glow plug light started flashing while driving. Yesterday I installed new LED number plate lights and while installing I blown the number plate fuse. Replace it and then they worked.

Or maybe is there anyone that has a diagnostic tool and willing to help me. I live near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire.

Appreciate your help!

I wouldnt recommend handheld scanners in that price range.

I use vcds-lite with an ebay obd2 cable which cost me less than 10 pounds and it works fine, though it depends what laptop I use.
It is a bit of a hit and miss thing but for 10 quid its worth trying.

Thanks guys,

What system does my car have... I hear of CANBUS OBDII 2x2 etc. I once had AA attend to my car and they were unable to connect their diagnostic to it as I didn't want to communicate. The guy told my my car was pre 2001 even though it was registered in 2001. THey changed the software or something in 2001

My car is a 2001 A2 1.4 TDI (Y-reg)

Not sure if everyone will agree but all A2's have canbus but only models from late 2001 added this for the 'infotainment' (radio) interface. On all model years however, the K-Line system is used for diagnostics (unlike all later model Audis which do use canbus for checking fault codes)

OBD11 is an international standard for diagnostics. The idea is that all vehicle manufacturers use this common standard so that government agencies (roadside checks and MOT's etc) can look for emissions related fault codes with a standard scanner. Many other fault codes will be common among manufacturers but its unlikely it will pick up unique problems - with an Audi MMI system for example.

Cheers Spike

Thanks spike.

I ordered a USB Cable of Amazon "USB OBD2 OBD-II VAG KKL Cable for 409.1 Audi VW Skoda"

and planning to use VCDS-lite.

I hope this will pinpoint the problem I have lately with my Glowplug coil light flashing while driving.

The coil light stopped flashing for no apperant reason.... so who knows what it was.

I received my usb cable and using VCDS-lite it picked up 1 fault

17552 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Open or Short to Ground
P1144 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

I haven't registered the software yet, would it allow me to delete the fault codes?

How much does a MAF usually cost? Europarts sells them for £226
